Almost done with renovation 🏡

Another week, new shit and old shit all together, let’s get it out of the way so we can move in soon! 😄

1. General cleaning quoted by ID - $500 ~ $700

Is really just a team of foreign workers (2-3 of them coming down to clean up the house with household detergents on weekends)

If you think you want a deep clean, you probably have to engage the professionals. So far I have not done so but seriously considering.

2. The tiler and the floor really caught me by surprise because most of the time the floor is protected and I didn’t check because the whole house is dusty, I did point out some parts near the door frame that needed touch ups but idk if we can get the tilers to come back since it’s so long ago already…

3. Painters engaged by IDs…. Speechless, the kitchen wall is still fat and ugly… the paint is so patchy and some parts on the false ceiling look so weird?!

3. Shout out to my all time favourite carpentry and laminate (I seriously dislike you) I did minimal work, the areas where my ID recommended some form of storage and drawers all turned out terrible (too small so no soft closing, too small so practically can put nothing). These drawers are too loose/ too tight and needs rectification but it’s not done…

So people, if you are thinking of getting contractor or ID, you should seriously ask them if their carpenters are 💩 or not (no hard feelings man). Cause it’s 1/2 the renovation budget and imagine every custom order is messed up… you will have a tough time. I’ll rather you engage separately.

... Read moreDuring a home renovation, the final stages often reveal unexpected challenges, as I experienced firsthand. The finishing touches like cleaning, tiling, painting, and carpentry can significantly impact your satisfaction with the project. One key lesson I learned is the importance of professional deep cleaning. While the general cleaning team I hired was affordable and punctual, they used only household detergents and limited manpower, which may not suffice for removing renovation dust and grime thoroughly. For anyone moving into a freshly renovated home, investing in a specialist deep cleaning service can save stress and improve hygiene. Regarding tiling and flooring, protecting surfaces during renovation is vital. In my case, some areas near door frames needed touch ups, but it’s often difficult to get contractors to revisit after time has passed. Regular inspections and immediate follow-up can help address such issues before project completion. Painting also required careful attention. Although painters were engaged by the interior designer, I encountered uneven and patchy finishes on kitchen walls and false ceilings. If possible, request to see paint samples or progress during work to ensure quality meets your expectations. Carpentry turned out to be the most frustrating element. Custom storage and drawers recommended by the ID did not fit well, lacked soft-closing features, and had inconsistent gaps causing loose or tight fittings. This consumed nearly half of my renovation budget, and ongoing rectifications create headaches. My advice: thoroughly vet carpenters before engagement and consider hiring them separately rather than through interior designers to maintain better control over quality. Additionally, minor details like sealing gaps that invite insects or poorly boxed-in air conditioning units can diminish living comfort. Paying close attention to workmanship and requesting regular progress checks help avoid these pitfalls. Overall, managing a renovation requires balancing budget, quality, and timing. Take extra measures for quality control on critical trades like carpentry and painting, and prioritize a comprehensive cleaning before moving in. These steps will help you enjoy your newly renovated home without lingering issues or surprises.
