Is yelling during fights normal or a red flag?

Confession: I yelled during arguments. Is it a red flag?

Sometimes I yell at my husband when I’m mad, and it’s something I always regret afterwards. I make sure to apologize once I’ve calmed down, but in the moment, my frustration just gets the best of me especially when I’ve had to repeat myself more than two times. It’s not how I want to communicate, but it happens, and it leaves me feeling guilty.

I’ll admit that sometimes I can get really mean with my words. I’ll throw in sarcastic comments like, “Can you not read?” if I texted him something or “Can you not hear?” when I’ve asked him more than once. I know it’s harsh, and I don’t say it because I want to hurt him, but because I feel ignored and that frustration slips out in the wrong way.

I’m not proud of raising my voice when I’m angry. I grew up in a household where yelling was the default way to handle conflict, so it feels almost second nature at times. I know that’s not an excuse, and I want to break that pattern. But sometimes it just hits me, and I don’t even realize I’ve raised my voice until it’s already too late.

If this behavior is toxic, then I want to acknowledge that and take responsibility for it. I don’t want to hurt the person I love or make him feel small because of my words or tone. I know that relationships take patience, communication, and respect, and yelling doesn’t reflect the kind of partner I want to be.

... Read moreYelling during conflicts is a common experience in many relationships, but it can often leave both partners feeling hurt and misunderstood. From the OCR content, it's clear that frustration builds up when one partner feels unheard or when repeated requests seem ignored, which can trigger an instinctive raised voice. This is especially true if someone grew up in an environment where yelling was the norm, making it almost second nature. However, understanding the reasons behind this behavior is the first step toward change. It’s important to recognize that occasional yelling doesn’t necessarily mean a relationship is toxic, but patterns of aggressive or sarcastic remarks, like "Can you not read?" or "Can you not hear?", might indicate deeper communication issues. These comments, even if not intended to hurt, can make the receiving partner feel small or dismissed, which can lead to resentment over time. Efforts to change this dynamic involve self-awareness and active patience. Apologizing after yelling and acknowledging the impact of words can promote healing. Additionally, partners can work together to find strategies that prevent escalation, such as taking breaks during heated moments, setting clear communication expectations, or exploring couples therapy. Most importantly, breaking free from old patterns, especially those learned from childhood, takes time and commitment. The goal isn’t to suppress emotions but to express frustration respectfully and constructively. When both partners feel safe to communicate their needs without fear of shouting or sarcasm, it builds a foundation of respect and understanding. This transformation ultimately leads to healthier, more supportive relationships where both individuals feel valued and heard.

Anger and frustration can really get the best of us, my husband and I struggle with the same thing. I usually do the yelling though because I do not feel heard. Most times I felt ignored and that lead to my frustration winning:/ We are both trying to be quick listeners and slow speakers. Meaning as they speak be quick to listen to what their need or want is from you, and be slow to answer making sure that what you respond with is not hurting them, it should be uplifting them. Whatever the case may be in the argument, your job is to love your partner, so are we lifting our partners up with our words and actions or hurting them?

The first slide introduces the topic: 'Yelling at Kids Works — But at a Cost,' promising the honest truth about its short-term and long-term effects, based on science, with a 'SAVE THIS POST!' call to action.
The second slide explains 'WHY IT WORKS,' stating that yelling triggers a child's threat response, leading to compliance. This immediate result is a powerful reward, teaching the brain 'yelling = compliance,' making it hard to stop.
The third slide details 'THE REAL COSTS' of yelling in the long run: it erodes relationships, raises the threshold for compliance, keeps children's nervous systems on alert, and models yelling as a tool.
Yelling works — but here’s what it costs 🗣️
Can I say the thing nobody wants to say out loud? Yelling works. That’s why we do it. The kids stop. They comply. And our brain registers: that worked. So the next time we’re maxed out and nothing else is landing, our brain goes right back there. But here’s what it’s costing over time. And i
