Foods I Thought Were Healthy (But Now Skip!) 🍎🤔

... Read moreHey everyone! 👋 I’ve been on a journey to truly understand what "healthy" means for my body, and honestly, some of my discoveries were quite shocking! I used to blindly trust certain products, but after digging into the ingredients and nutritional facts, I realized many so-called "healthy" foods are far from it. My goal now is to share what I've learned so you can make more informed choices too. Let's start with yogurt. For years, I’d grab those fruit-on-the-bottom Dannon or Yoplait yogurts, thinking I was making a smart, protein-packed choice. But when I actually compared the sugar content of flavored yogurts versus plain Greek yogurt, I was stunned. Many flavored varieties can contain as much added sugar as a dessert, causing unwanted blood sugar spikes and energy crashes. My personal switch to plain, high-protein options like Siggi's or Fage Total Greek Yogurt has been a game-changer. I now sweeten them naturally with fresh berries, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or a tiny bit of honey. It tastes better, keeps me full longer, and avoids all that unnecessary added sugar! Next up, the classic fruit juice versus whole fruit dilemma. Like many, I grew up thinking a glass of Tropicana orange juice was the epitome of a healthy breakfast. But here’s the truth: juicing fruit often strips away its beneficial fiber. Fiber is vital because it helps regulate how quickly sugar enters your bloodstream, preventing those rapid blood sugar spikes. Without it, even natural fruit sugars can act much like refined sugar in your body. That's why eating a whole apple provides sustained energy and satiety, while apple juice can leave you feeling hungry again quickly. If you crave a liquid fruit fix, I suggest opting for cold-pressed, low-sugar alternatives like Naked Juice or Suja Organic, and always consume them in moderation, perhaps even diluted with sparkling water. And who hasn't reached for a diet soda? I certainly did, believing I was making a calorie-free, sugar-free choice with brands like Diet Coke or Pepsi Zero Sugar. However, the more I researched artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose, the more questions I had. While calorie-free, some studies suggest they might impact our gut microbiome, alter taste perception, and even paradoxically increase cravings for sweet foods. For my own well-being, I’ve decided to avoid them. Now, I find fizzy satisfaction in natural alternatives like Spindrift (flavored with real fruit juice), LaCroix, or Zevia, which uses stevia for sweetness. Finally, I want to quickly mention granola bars and vegetable chips. Many popular granola bars, even those seemingly wholesome ones like Nature Valley or Quaker Chewy, are often packed with hidden sugars and processed ingredients – basically glorified candy bars. Similarly, "vegetable chips" from brands like Terra or Veggie Straws often contain very little actual vegetable and a lot of potato starch, oil, and salt, offering minimal nutritional value. Instead, I now opt for truly nourishing snacks like RXBARs or KIND Bars with whole ingredients, or crunchy alternatives like Rhythm Superfoods Kale Chips or Simple Truth Organic Seaweed Snacks. It's empowering to learn what's truly nourishing for your body. My biggest takeaway? Always read those labels carefully and don't be swayed by marketing claims. Your health is worth it!

Naked smoothies are not that healthy. Sure you can get some fiber and fruits/veggies in but they are loaded with sugar— sometimes more than soda

Cocktail juice is made to be mixed in drinks not drunk by itself hence the name cocktail, that’s why it’s loaded with sugar. 100% cranberry juice IS healthy.
