... Read moreMy journey to shed the weight started when I realized being at 380 lbs wasn't just about the number on the scale; it was about how I felt every single day. I was tired, less active with my kids, and honestly, a bit overwhelmed by where to even begin. It's a huge mountain to climb, but the first step, no matter how small, is the most important. For me, that meant deciding I wanted more for myself and my family, embodying that 'dad bod' transformation not just for looks, but for life. One of the biggest game-changers has been focusing on nutrition. When you're carrying a lot of weight, it's easy to feel like you need drastic, unsustainable diets. I learned that small, consistent changes make the biggest difference. I started by tracking what I ate, not to restrict everything, but to understand my habits. Swapping out sugary drinks for water, increasing my protein intake, and making sure I had plenty of vegetables at each meal became non-negotiables. It wasn't about perfection, but about progress. I still enjoy my cultural foods, but now I'm mindful of portion sizes and how I prepare them. It’s about finding balance that works for my life. Then came the strength training. For years, I avoided the gym, thinking cardio was the only way to lose weight. But lifting weights has completely transformed my body composition and my energy levels. Starting out, it felt intimidating, but I focused on compound movements – squats, deadlifts, presses – using weights that challenged me without causing injury. Consistency is key here; even 2-3 sessions a week can yield incredible results. Not only does it help burn more calories, but it's given me a new kind of strength and confidence. I'm building muscle, which helps my metabolism, and I feel physically stronger, which is amazing when playing with my kids or participating in cultural activities. Reaching 303 lbs from 380 lbs has been an incredible milestone, but also a tough one. Being so close to breaking that 300 lbs barrier, yet not quite making it yet, can be frustrating, I won't lie! But it's also a powerful motivator. This journey isn't just about the numbers; it's about honoring my #polynesianculture by striving for strength and well-being, and being a role model for my kids. They are my 'why.' Every lift, every healthy meal, every early morning workout is for them, and for the legacy I want to leave. This isn't just a physical transformation; it's a mental and spiritual one too. If you're starting your own wellness journey, especially if you're feeling overwhelmed by a larger starting weight like I was at 380 lbs, remember to be patient with yourself. Find your 'why,' whether it's for your family, your health, or just to feel better in your own skin. Focus on sustainable changes, embrace strength training, and don't get discouraged by setbacks. We're in this together, and I'm excited to share more practical tips and tricks as I push to finally break under 300 lbs!
