What if consciousness isn’t simply:
ON while awake
OFF while asleep
Scientists are now comparing different dimensions of consciousness between dreaming and waking.
Memory changes.
Time changes.
Body awareness changes.
Self reflection changes.
And somehow the dream can still feel completely real. 👁️

Many people experience dreams as vivid and realistic, yet science traditionally viewed consciousness as a simple ON/OFF state—awake or asleep. However, recent research has introduced a more nuanced perspective. Scientists have developed a Consciousness States Comparison Scale that evaluates 8 dimensions of conscious experience during dreams, such as metacognitive awareness, cognitive fluency, memory, time and spatial awareness, emotional and bodily sensations. This approach treats consciousness more like a mixing board with multiple sliders adjusting in complexity rather than a light switch. From my personal experience, keeping a dream journal and reflecting on these dimensions can deepen self-awareness. Nights when I had high metacognitive awareness in dreams—knowing I was dreaming—felt empowering and allowed me to explore dream control techniques. I noticed changes in time perception during dreams; minutes could feel like hours or vice versa, highlighting how fluid our internal sense of time is. Emotional awareness also varies, sometimes intensifying feelings or muting them, which impacts how memorable a dream becomes. This scale doesn’t claim that dreams reveal supernatural knowledge or predict the future, but it offers structured insights into how consciousness shifts. Such understanding has practical implications for mental health research, especially in exploring how emotions and memories manifest differently in sleep. Through this lens, dreams become a valuable tool for introspection and mental wellness. Exploring these dimensions personally led me to appreciate consciousness as a complex and dynamic state, encouraging continued questioning and learning about the mind. Whether you’re interested in lucid dreaming or simply understanding your inner world better, recognizing these dimensions enriches the dream experience and fosters a deeper connection with yourself.
