It is believed that many people, especially those who grew up with Windows XP, have a similar moment: right-click on the desktop and press Refresh repeatedly because they believe that it helps to slip up when no one can clearly tell if it really helps or just feels.

The question is, what does pressing Refresh on the Windows desktop really do to our machine, and does pressing it repeatedly have any effect?

In fact, the Refresh button does not help speed up the machine in any way. Its function is to refresh the desktop display, or simply, to reopen the screen, to update the elements on the screen to match the actual file structure on the system, such as if an icon is missing, an unusually displayed icon, or a recently copied or moved file has not appeared on the desktop immediately.

And if you press Refresh repeatedly, will the machine be faster? The answer is no. Pressing this button does not increase the frame rate, does not clear the ram, and does not make the CPU work better. The belief that pressing it allows the game to slip up is probably just a belief that we created ourselves in childhood and accidentally believed without proof.

More interestingly, if the desktop is already displayed correctly, repeatedly pressing Refresh adds a slight system burden because Windows requires the resources of the CPU to display the new screen unnecessarily. While it is a very small burden, it does not bring any added benefit.
