First bug of the year 🚨
Microsoft has confirmed that the latest update, Patch Tuesday for January 2026, has caused problems with several versions of Windows. Important bugs have been found to affect the shutdown. The Hibernate mode implementation includes Microsoft's Cloud PC service connection.

The first problem was found in Windows 11 version 23H2. After installing security update KB5073455, some users were unable to Shutdown or enter Hibernate mode as usual. When opting to shut down, the system will be restored instead.

According to Microsoft, this problem occurs only on machines that open the Secure Launch feature. It is a deep-level security system that uses Virtualization-based Security technology and the Dynamic Root of Trust for Measurement (DRTM) mechanism to prevent firmware-level attacks, and is often found on a group of machines called Secured-core PC. In the early days, Microsoft recommended fixing the problem by using CMD commands instead of shutdown / s / t 0.

In addition to that problem, the same month's Patch Tuesday update affected some Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server users. The problem was that Microsoft 365 Cloud PC, Windows 365, and Azure Virtual Desktop could not be connected due to a credential prompt failure during the connection through a Remote Desktop or Windows App application.

To address both parts of the problem, Microsoft issued Emergency Updates, or Out-of-band Updates (OOB), for several versions of Windows, covering both Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server. The update resolves Cloud PC connectivity issues, including solving shutdown bugs and Hibernate mode on Windows 11 23H2 enabled Secure Launch.

According to Microsoft, these emergency updates have not been released through Windows Update as usual. Users and administrators need to download and install them manually through the Microsoft Update Catalog, while organizations that cannot install OOB Update immediately can use the Known Issue Rollback (KIR) approach through Group Policy to temporarily reverse changes that cause problems.

However, if the device is not affected by such problems, Microsoft recommends that an emergency update is not yet needed and can wait for an official fix to be included in the next round of Preview or Patch Tuesday updates.
