This industry, if you see someone going well, Microsoft will always ask to be involved.
Microsoft officially announced Copilot Cowork as General Availability (GA) worldwide on June 16, 2026 for Microsoft 365 Copilot customers, elevating Copilot's role from a mere quiz assistant, data summary, or document creation to a "digital colleague" who can receive assignments and perform tasks instead of users more automatically.
.
Copilot Cowork was developed under the AI Agent or Agental AI concept, which refers to an AI that is not just waiting for a step-by-step order, but can understand the goals of a task, plan and complete multiple successive steps. For example, analyzing a large number of emails, summarizing data from multiple documents, comparing files in various projects, tracking job status, meeting appointments, to reporting in Word or Excel. It can work continuously even offline users.
.
Behind Copilot Cowork, Microsoft developed with Anthropic, the creator of the Claude family of AI models. In the general opening phase, the system primarily supports models like Claude Opus 4.8 and Claude Sonnet 4.6, while users in the Frontier project can also choose to use GPT-5.5. It reflects Microsoft's Multi-Model approach that does not rely on OpenAI alone, but opens the way to choose from multiple camps based on job characteristics and cost.
.
The strength of Copilot Cowork is that it connects to multiple parts of Microsoft 365 services - Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Calendar - allowing AI to understand more about in-house contexts - email, chat, documents, schedules, or files related to projects. Microsoft calls this behind-the-scenes system Work IQ, which allows Copilot Cowork to work more accurately and conform to corporate data than conventional AI.
.
Copilot Cowork also supports interoperability with several AI models, including plugins from external service providers, to provide wider connectivity to other functionality platforms. Another interesting feature is the ability to use the web through Microsoft Edge, such as searching for information, filling out forms, or performing certain actions on a website, subject to permissions and security policies defined by the organization.
.
On security, Microsoft stated that Copilot Cowork operates under the former Microsoft 365 data governance system, including user rights management, backwards monitoring, data leak protection, and various Compliance tools that the organization already uses.
.
However, Copilot Cowork is not a free service. Users need to have Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses first, and then pay-as-you-go additional charges based on the actual number of Copilot Credits used, depending on the workload, running AI models, and tools.
.
This global activation of the GA-style Copilot Cowork marked another milestone for Microsoft in pushing AI for organizations from intelligent assistants to digital colleagues who can help lighten repetitive tasks and increase everyday productivity.
