Should I let my parents move in with me?🥲

Well apparently they have no money and no plan and they knew for the last 4 months they had to leave🙁they keep sending me lots of messages saying their about to be homeless and they don’t know what their gonna do… you had 8 years!!! And now you wanna come to my house for another 8? 😗Plus I just turned 23 I don’t wanna live with my parents. (Ps I asked them how long they needed and they keep dodging the question😩)#fyp #AskLemon8 #tea #CommentChallenge

... Read moreDeciding whether to let your parents move in can be a tough call, especially when there’s no clear plan or timeline in place. Many young adults face the dilemma of balancing family support with their own need for independence. At 23, it’s natural to want your own space to live freely, enjoy your routines like weekend outings, and nurture your relationships without added stress. Countless people share the concern of extended stays turning indefinite, especially if parents avoid specifying how long they intend to stay. This can lead to tension around household boundaries and create uncertainty in your life. Experiences like being evicted or having to move around during your teens often make the thought of repeating such instability unwelcome. It’s important to communicate honestly but compassionately with your parents. Setting clear expectations about the duration and conditions of their stay is key. For instance, you might agree on a trial period with mutually agreed goals, like them actively seeking housing or employment. This helps prevent indefinite arrangements and keeps everyone accountable. Consider your lifestyle as well—if you value having space for yourself, socializing, or your partner, it’s okay to express that respectfully. While supporting parents is admirable, your well-being and personal growth should not be compromised. Finding a middle ground where you help them during a transition phase, but also protect your independence, is the goal. In cases where financial hardship forces parents to move in unexpectedly, exploring community resources or housing assistance programs together can be beneficial. This reduces pressure on you and encourages them to regain stability. Remember, many young adults navigate this balance, and setting boundaries does not mean you don’t care—it means you want a healthy household dynamic where everyone’s needs are respected. Open dialogue, a clear plan, and mutual understanding can ease the challenges of multi-generational living arrangements.

UPDATE-Thanks for all the advice! I ended up telling them my apartment won’t allow me guests for more then 2 days out of the week (which is true) and we also have inspections every 3 months so it would be pretty hard hiding my parents living with me. If I was to lose my apartment today I would have nobody to call so I can’t risk losing it. They ended trying to gaslight me into breaking my lease. So I’m considering just distancing myself if they can’t respect me trying to be responsible. I work almost every day for what I have and they wouldn’t even care if they destroyed it all.
