Survival seasons don’t look pretty🤍

The toughest season of my life didn’t look brave while I was in it.

It looked like survival.

Ten years ago, I went through a divorce and became a single mom to three kids, ages 10 to 16. Suddenly, everything was on me.

I had to find a better job.

A place for us to live.

Figure out how to parent most of the time on my own.

Pay the bills.

Get the car fixed.

Shovel the snow.

Sit alone at parent-teacher nights.

There were nights I cried myself to sleep, feeling like I was running as hard as I could and still getting nowhere.

Every time I felt like I got a step ahead, something happened—

the car broke down,

the kids needed school clothes,

Christmas was coming and I didn’t know how I’d make it work.

I felt like I was drowning.

No shore in sight.

No light at the end of the tunnel.

And yet… I kept going.

Now, fast forward ten years, and I see it differently.

I did a good job.

Even when it didn’t feel like it.

Even when I doubted myself.

I provided for my children financially and emotionally.

I learned how to do things I had never done on my own.

I grew into a version of myself I didn’t even know existed.

Looking back, I think:

How did I do all of that?

How did I survive that season?

The answer is resilience.

We are so much stronger than we give ourselves credit for.

And sometimes, the hardest chapters of our lives are the ones that quietly prove just how capable we really are.

If you’re in the middle of it right now—keep going.

One day, you’ll look back and realize:

You were stronger than you ever thought.

2/4 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I look back on that difficult period, what stands out most is the quiet strength resilience gave me. There were moments when I felt like giving up was the easier choice, especially when unexpected problems like car repairs or holiday expenses piled up. What kept me going was the simple refusal to stop—taking one small step forward each day, whether it was fixing something broken, making meals, or just being present for my kids. I learned quickly that survival wasn't glamorous or heroic in the traditional sense. It was messy and often lonely, especially sitting alone at parent-teacher meetings or managing finances on a tight budget. But these survival seasons teach us invaluable lessons about ourselves. For me, discovering my own strength was a turning point. It wasn’t about never feeling scared or tired; it was about continuing despite those feelings. I also found community in unexpected places. Other single parents, neighbors, even strangers at school events shared advice or a kind word, reminding me I wasn’t truly alone in this journey. One practical takeaway I’d share with anyone going through a tough season is to seek support when you can—whether emotional, financial, or just someone to listen. Resilience also showed me how capable I was of growth. Ten years later, I’m not only proud of what I provided for my children but amazed at how much I evolved. Challenges forced me to master skills I never imagined needing—from budgeting to DIY fixes, to navigating co-parenting and emotional ups and downs. For anyone currently in their survival season, know this: your efforts are not invisible, even if progress seems slow. The hardest chapters often build the strongest foundations. Keep going, because you are more resourceful and tougher than you might believe right now. When you reflect back someday, you’ll see just how much strength and courage you showed—even if it didn’t look pretty at the time.
