Surgery for teeth 🦷

So I have had teeth and gum issues for ever. It reached a point to where I was sick all the time and in constant pain. This is the days following my first surgery. I choose not to go with immediate dentures, due to my health being poor. #dentalsurgery #surgery #i hate my teeth #unfiltered

... Read moreOkay, so if you're here, chances are you're dealing with some post-dental procedure swelling, and trust me, I get it. That puffy feeling, the discomfort… it's no fun. My recent experience with having 28 teeth removed, including some deep in my sinus cavity, gave me a crash course in managing significant facial swelling. I remember looking at myself on Day 3, seeing my face all puffy, and just feeling so tired from the whole ordeal. But what about swelling from other procedures, like a root canal? While my surgery was about extractions, I know many of you might be concerned about swelling after a root canal. It's actually quite common, though usually less dramatic than what you see after multiple extractions. A root canal involves cleaning out infection from the tooth's pulp. Sometimes, even with the best procedure, the surrounding tissues can react, leading to temporary swelling. This might be due to residual infection, irritation from the procedure itself, or even difficulty accessing the infected area. Typically, this swelling is localized around the treated tooth and often resolves within a few days with proper care and any prescribed medication. Whether it's from a root canal or major surgery like mine, managing the swelling is key to comfort. Here's what helped me and what dentists usually recommend: Cold Compress: For the first 24-48 hours, ice packs are your best friend! I diligently applied mine to my jaw, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. It really helps constrict blood vessels and reduce that initial puffiness. The images from my Day 1 and Day 2 recovery show how important it was to start with this immediately after getting home, even with the gauze pads still in place. Warm Compresses (after 48 hours): After that initial period, if swelling persists, some people find gentle warm compresses helpful. This can increase blood flow to the area and aid in healing, but always check with your dentist first. Pain Medication: Stay on top of your pain medication, whether it's over-the-counter ibuprofen (which is great for inflammation) or something stronger prescribed by your dentist. Don't wait for the pain to get unbearable. Elevation: Sleeping with your head slightly elevated helps. I propped myself up with extra pillows, and it seemed to make a difference in reducing morning swelling. It was hard to get comfortable when I was so tired, but it helped. Soft Diet: Eating soft foods prevents you from straining your jaw and irritating the surgical site, which can exacerbate swelling. Think smoothies, soups, mashed potatoes – anything that doesn't require much chewing. Oral Hygiene: Gentle oral hygiene is crucial to prevent further infection. I was given specific instructions for rinsing and brushing gently around the extraction sites. For root canal patients, this is also important around the treated tooth. Rest: Honestly, rest is probably the most underrated recovery tool. Your body needs energy to heal. My Day 2 picture really captures how drained I felt, and that's because my body was working overtime to recover. Hydration: Drink plenty of water! Staying hydrated supports your body's healing processes. While some swelling is normal, pay attention to signs like swelling that increases significantly after 3-4 days, fever, severe pain that isn't controlled by medication, or pus. These could indicate an infection, and you should call your dentist immediately. My facial swelling started to subside by Day 4, as you can see in the images, so if yours gets worse, definitely get it checked out. Dealing with dental surgery, whether it's a root canal or comprehensive extractions, is tough. But knowing what to expect with swelling and how to manage it can make a huge difference in your comfort and recovery. Hang in there, you'll get through it!
