Carbonation after weight loss surgery?!

2024/12/20 Edited to

... Read moreOh, the forbidden fizz! If you're like me, one of the biggest questions after weight loss surgery is, 'Can I ever drink carbonation again?' Trust me, I’ve been there, staring longingly at a sparkling drink. My journey post-gastric sleeve has been full of learning, and this was a big one. For anyone in the #vsgcommunity or on a #gastricsleevejourney, the answer is usually a resounding 'no' from our medical teams, at least initially. And for good reason! When you’ve had bariatric surgery, your stomach is significantly smaller and its structure is altered. Introducing carbonated drinks, whether it’s soda, sparkling water, or even some fizzy vitamin drinks, can cause a few major issues. First and foremost, the gas! That carbon dioxide expands in your tiny new stomach, leading to immense discomfort, pain, and even pressure. I remember a few times, early on, I tried a tiny sip of something carbonated, and it felt like my stomach was going to explode. The burping was relentless, and honestly, quite embarrassing. This leads me to a common concern I've heard: 'I can hear soda' after drinking it. If you're experiencing strange gurgling, popping, or sloshing noises in your stomach after even a small amount of carbonation, you're not alone! With a smaller pouch, the liquid and gas have less space to move freely, creating these audible sensations. It's your body's way of telling you that your digestive system is struggling with the extra volume and pressure. It's not just uncomfortable; it can be a sign of increased pressure on your surgical staples and potentially lead to pouch stretching over time, which we absolutely want to avoid. Beyond the immediate discomfort, doctors also warn against carbonation because it displaces nutrient-dense foods and liquids. We have such limited stomach capacity post-op, every sip and bite needs to count! Sugary sodas offer empty calories, and even diet sodas can contribute to cravings for sweets. Plus, some studies suggest that artificial sweeteners might affect gut microbiota, which is something to consider for long-term health after bariatric surgery. While not directly related to gallbladder removal, many people who've undergone any abdominal surgery experience heightened sensitivities to certain foods and drinks, and carbonation is often high on that list due to digestive system changes. It's about respecting your altered anatomy. So, what's a bariatric bab to do when a craving strikes? My go-to alternatives include plain water (obviously!), flavored sugar-free water (without carbonation), decaf iced tea, or diluted fruit juices (watch the sugar content!). Some people can tolerate small sips of flat sparkling water much later in their journey, but always, always check with your surgeon or dietitian first. They know your specific case best. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and protecting your new stomach is key to long-term success. Don't risk those painful gas bubbles or potential complications for a fleeting fizz. Stay strong, #bariatricbab!

1) purchase bariatric vitamins (need to have iron in them) 2) Invest in protein powder (you can buy a big tub of it at Walmart for $25.00 3) Buy some crystal light packets & jello (believe it or not, they are sugar free!) 4) Discuss with your doctor if the bypass or sleeve is best for you.
