can you actually afford to be sick? 🤒

Let’s do some real talk.

$4,000/month sounds okay on paper.

But once you break it down in Singapore

💸 Rent / mortgage

🍜 Food & groceries

🚆 Transport

📱 Bills, parents allowance, maybe a bit of savings

What’s left isn’t that much.

Now imagine this 👇

You fall sick. Not flu. Something more serious.

🏥 A&E visit

🛏️ Hospital stay

⏳ Time off work (no income, or unpaid leave)

Suddenly it’s not just about medical bills —

It’s about cash flow, stress, and choices you didn’t plan to make.

A few uncomfortable truths:

Medisave helps, but it’s not unlimited

Government subsidies are great, but there’s still out-of-pocket

Most people don’t plan for being sick in their 20s or 30s — until it happens

Being “able to afford life”

Being “able to afford getting sick”

Peace of mind isn’t about luxury.

Sometimes it’s just knowing one bad month won’t wipe you out.

Just something to think about 💭

... Read moreFrom my own journey navigating health and finances, I realized that preparing for illness isn’t just about having insurance but understanding the full scope of costs involved when you fall sick. Beyond hospital bills, you must consider unpaid leave or lost income, especially in Singapore where living expenses like rent, food, transport, and family support already take a big chunk out of earnings. Many young adults, including myself, don’t expect serious illness early in their careers, so we often overlook setting aside emergency funds specifically for health. Medisave and subsidies help but aren’t unlimited; unexpected treatments and long hospital stays quickly drain savings. To improve financial resilience, I began budgeting for worst-case scenarios and researching flexible insurance plans that cover income loss. Also, leaning on community support and understanding available government assistance can ease burdens during tough times. Ultimately, I found that true affordability means having enough buffer not just for day-to-day life, but for those unexpected health crises that can disrupt everything. It’s a wake-up call to rethink what ‘being able to afford life’ truly means in Singapore today.
