Magical must-visit bookstore in Portugal

When I heard there was a Harry Potter inspired bookstore in Portugal, I knew I couldn’t miss it!

Welcome to Hogwarts….sorry, Livaria Lello, in Porto. Known as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, add this gem to your Portugal itinerary.

With its carved wood banisters, stained glass ceiling, and iconic red staircase, it feels like stepping straight into the wizarding world.

J.K. Rowlings lived in Porto for a while, and it was rumored for years that this enchanting bookstore may have inspired her when creating Hogwarts. Although she has since denied this, the magic and Harry Potter world feel here is undeniable.

Know before you go:

🎟️ Entry requires a ticket voucher, which is $10 USD and can be credited towards the purchase of a book.

⏰ Although you can purchase your ticket in person, it’s recommend to pre-book online, where you will receive a specific time slot for entry and can avoid the insanely long lines for entry (you may still have a short wait, but you can also purchase priority entrance tickets).

📕 Open daily, from 9:00am to 7:30pm, late afternoon being a better time to avoid heavy crowds.

⏳ Plan to spend about an hour or more here to explore, browse and capture the magic. Just know - the bookstore does get very packed so it will not be easy to get photos without others in your shots.

Don’t forget to pick out a book as the perfect souvenir! Would you add this to your Harry Potter travel bucket list?

Portugal Livraria Lello Porto

Portugal
2025/9/24 Edited to

... Read moreVisiting Livraria Lello was truly an experience I won't soon forget, and if you're planning a trip to Porto, you absolutely have to add this gem to your itinerary. While the article touches on the highlights, I wanted to share a few more personal insights and practical tips that might help you maximize your visit to this 'Hogwarts-esque' haven. First off, let's talk about the *vibe*. The moment you step inside, the grandeur of the space truly hits you. The ornate carved wooden staircase, a vibrant ruby red, is undeniably the star of the show. It winds its way up like something out of a fantasy novel, making you feel like you're about to stumble upon a secret chamber or a hidden library. I spent ages just admiring the intricate details of the wood carvings and the way the light played off them. Don't rush past it – take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship that went into creating such a stunning centerpiece. Then there's the stained-glass ceiling. It's not just a ceiling; it's a masterpiece. The geometric patterns and vibrant colors create this incredible, warm glow throughout the entire bookstore, especially on a sunny day. Looking up, you can really see the artistry, and how it transforms the atmosphere. It makes browsing the bookshelves, filled with a vast array of titles and even little literary figures tucked away, feel even more magical. I particularly loved spotting the little ornate lantern details hanging from above, adding to the old-world charm. Regarding the Harry Potter connection, even though J.K. Rowling has clarified it wasn't a direct inspiration, the feeling is so strong. As a huge fan, I could totally imagine scenes from Hogwarts playing out here – perhaps a secret meeting in one of the quiet corners, or students rushing up and down the red staircase. It's less about historical fact and more about the shared aura of magic and knowledge. This is truly a place where imagination thrives! A few extra tips for your visit: Tickets & Entry: The article mentions pre-booking online, which is absolutely essential. I saw people in the physical queue waiting for hours! Consider purchasing the priority entrance ticket if your schedule is tight and you want to ensure minimal waiting time. It's a small extra cost but can save you a lot of frustration. Best Time to Visit: While late afternoon is suggested, I found that even earlier visitors could experience slightly fewer crowds if you hit it right at opening or during a quieter weekday. However, the late afternoon light does enhance the stained-glass effect beautifully. Just be prepared for people, as it's a popular spot! Photo Opportunities: Getting a clear shot of the staircase or ceiling without people is a challenge. My advice? Try to go early or late, and be patient. Also, look for unique angles – don't just stand in the middle. Focus on close-ups of the architectural details or the books themselves. Beyond the Bookstore: Once you're done exploring Livraria Lello, take some time to wander the charming streets of Porto. The bookstore is centrally located, so you're within walking distance of many other beautiful sights and delicious eateries. Make a day of it! Remember, it's not just a bookstore; it's an experience. Embrace the crowds, soak in the atmosphere, and let your imagination run wild. And definitely pick up a book – it makes for the perfect, most authentic souvenir from your magical Porto adventure!
