#Ethiopian Airlines
It feels surreal sometimes, looking out from the cockpit of a majestic Boeing 787 Dreamliner, knowing I'm at the controls, guiding hundreds of passengers across continents. My name is Amsale Gualu, and I'm incredibly proud to be a Captain with Ethiopian Airlines. People often ask me what it took to get here, and honestly, it’s a story of unwavering passion and relentless dedication. Growing up, the skies always called to me. I was fascinated by airplanes and the idea of soaring above the clouds. But in Ethiopia, the path for a young girl to become a pilot wasn’t always clear. It required breaking barriers and challenging expectations, not just for myself but for those who would follow. The journey through flight school was rigorous, demanding every ounce of my focus and resilience. There were moments of doubt, of course, when the sheer complexity of aviation seemed overwhelming, but the dream of one day commanding an aircraft like the one with tail number ET-AXL, a state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9, kept me steadfastly going. Joining Ethiopian Airlines was more than just gaining a job; it was a dream come true and an honor. This airline isn't just a carrier; it's a symbol of Ethiopia's spirit, resilience, and its vital connection to the global community. Every time I put on my uniform, I feel a deep sense of responsibility and immense pride, not just for my own achievements but for representing my country and its pioneering spirit. Flying the Boeing 787 is particularly special. It's an incredible piece of engineering, known for its fuel efficiency, quiet cabin, and advanced systems, offering passengers a supremely comfortable experience. For us pilots, its sophisticated fly-by-wire controls and integrated avionics make it a truly modern and responsive flying machine, a joy to operate on long-haul routes. My typical day starts long before sunrise, often before the city even begins to stir. Pre-flight checks are meticulous, covering everything from detailed weather patterns along our route to precise fuel calculations and systems diagnostics. Communication with my first officer and the dedicated cabin crew is absolutely crucial, ensuring everyone is on the same page for a seamless and, most importantly, safe journey for our passengers. Once we're airborne, there’s a unique tranquility in the sky, even as we navigate complex air traffic control instructions and adapt to changing atmospheric conditions. It’s a constant, dynamic dance between human skill, experience, and cutting-edge technological assistance. I hope my story can inspire other young women, not just in Ethiopia but everywhere across the globe, to pursue their dreams, no matter how challenging or unconventional they may seem. The aviation industry is rapidly evolving, and there’s a growing and essential place for diverse talents and perspectives. If you have the passion, the discipline, and the courage to reach for the sky, to push past perceived limitations, you truly can achieve anything. Being a Captain, especially of such a magnificent and technologically advanced aircraft like the BOEING 787·9, is more than just a job; it’s a profound privilege, a continuous learning experience, and an adventure I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.
