Only buying from vendors with no customers at the Farmers Market
📍Rosie's BBQ & Smokehouse (Riley Park Farmers Market)
One of the most rewarding ways to experience a farmers market is by seeking out the vendors who don't have a crowd around them. Often, this means discovering hidden gems that haven’t yet been blown up by popular demand. During my visits to Riley Park Farmers Market, I decided to try this approach, focusing on vendors like Rosie’s BBQ & Smokehouse — a stall that offers a truly unique BBQ experience. What sets Rosie’s apart is their incredible smoked brisket, which is slow-cooked to perfection, and their pork rinds infused with distinct flavors like habanero that bring a spicy kick. The vendor was more than happy to share insights about each item, encouraging me to try the hottest rind called the "Wreck" — a fiery challenge for spice lovers. Trying something new without any preconceptions made the experience feel fresh and authentic. It was interesting to note that sometimes vendors with no visible customers aren’t a reflection of the quality but perhaps a result of less marketing or being new arrivals to the market. Sampling the hot cornbread unique to Rosie’s wasn’t exactly my favorite, but it paired wonderfully with the smoked meats, adding a sweet or spicy balance. This solo adventure also made me more present to the farmers market atmosphere — from the giant smoker puffing out delicious aromas to the friendly conversations about sauces and cooking tips. The recommendation to get napkins ready was spot on, as the food was delectably messy! In summary, approaching the farmers market by choosing vendors without customers can lead to delightful surprises and encourage more interaction with passionate sellers. It’s a way to support up-and-coming artisans and discover new favorites before they become mainstream. Next time you find yourself at a farmers market, especially a place like Riley Park, consider stepping off the beaten path — your taste buds and the local vendors will thank you.
