Advancing Your Listening Skills At Work

The center of doing well in your career is the ability to clarify the message and “the ask,” to try to anticipate what the audience will care about, and the questions or objections they may have. There are 3 levels of listening to be aware of so that you are clearly aligned with the audience.

Level 1: At the most basic level, good listening is about retention of facts, things you heard, details.

Level 2: The next step beyond that is to listen for more than just facts, but to listen and try to determine implication, and what might matter to your audience. You hear the facts, and you start to analyze what else might be important for your audience

Level 3: The highest level of listening occurs when you absorb broad inputs — what people say, or DON’T say, how they say it, their facial expression and body language when they say it, etc. At this highest level, you are absorbing everything about the moment, everything about the person, and you are completely mindful and present.

... Read moreWhen I first started my career, I thought listening was just about hearing what people said. Boy, was I wrong! It took me a while to realize that truly advancing your skills at work, especially listening, is about so much more – it’s about building empathy and developing vital transferable skills that benefit every area of your life. I used to struggle with understanding my colleagues' underlying needs, often missing crucial cues in meetings. But then I started applying the concept of understanding needs and listening at different levels, and it completely shifted my perspective. The first level, retaining facts, was easy enough. I could remember details, but I wasn't grasping the bigger picture. It was only when I pushed myself to Level 2, listening for implication, that I started to develop real empathy. Instead of just hearing a request, I'd ask myself, "Why is this important to them? What's the context I might be missing?" This made a huge difference in how I responded, moving from just fulfilling tasks to genuinely anticipating needs. Level 3, absorbing broad inputs, was a true revelation. It taught me to pay attention to what wasn't being said – the hesitation in someone's voice, their worried expression, or even a sudden change in body language. This holistic approach to listening is where empathy truly blossoms. When you're mindful and present, you start to pick up on the emotional landscape of the conversation, allowing you to connect on a deeper level. I found myself instinctively offering support or clarifying points before they even had to ask, simply because I was attuned to their non-verbal signals. This isn't just a work skill; it's a life skill that profoundly impacts all your relationships. These three levels of listening: retention of facts, determining implication, and absorbing broad inputs, aren't confined to the office. They are the epitome of transferable skills. Think about it: how often do misunderstandings arise in personal relationships because someone isn't truly listening? Learning to listen with empathy has strengthened my friendships and family connections significantly. I've become a better friend, partner, and family member simply by applying these same principles. Whether it's understanding a friend's hidden worries or navigating a complex family discussion, the ability to listen deeply and empathetically is invaluable. Practicing active listening, by summarizing what you've heard or asking clarifying questions, has also been a game-changer. It shows the other person you're engaged and that their message matters. This isn't just about being polite; it’s a powerful way to validate their feelings and build trust. By actively working on my listening, I've not only improved my career prospects but also enriched my personal life, making me feel more connected and understood, and in turn, better able to understand others. It’s a continuous journey, but one that yields incredible rewards in empathy, understanding, and overall life success.
