God wanted me to be a long term care dietitian, not me 😭
But here I am 6 months after finishing my dietetic internship and 3 months after passing my exam and I’m loving it!

Starting out in any healthcare profession can be filled with uncertainty—but sometimes, the path you least expect ends up being the most rewarding. When I first heard I would be working in a long term care facility, I admit the thought made me sick to my stomach. I had imagined a career as a clinical dietitian in a more fast-paced acute care environment. However, after finishing my dietetic internship and passing my exam, I found myself working at a 90-bed facility specializing in rehab and long term care, and I couldn’t be happier. Long term care dietetics offers unique challenges and rewards. Here, nutrition is not just about immediate treatment; it’s about improving quality of life for residents who often have complex, chronic health conditions. Every day, I collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to create personalized nutrition plans that support rehabilitation and long-term health management. Working in this setting has also helped me develop skills I hadn’t anticipated—like patient communication, empathy, and patience—which are crucial for fostering trust with residents and their families. The slower pace allows me to focus deeply on individual needs, which is gratifying and meaningful. If you’re a dietitian starting out or feeling uncertain about long term care, I encourage you to embrace the opportunity. This field is often overlooked, but it offers tremendous professional growth and the chance to make a profound impact on people’s lives. Remember, sometimes 'God’s plan' or career twists lead to unexpected joy and success!
