The Story 📖:

Rory is back home to help her twin sister’s pregnancy. One night on the way home from the bar, she’s bitten by a werewolf and her life is turned completely upside down. Now she has to figure out how to live her life as a werewolf, while also falling for her high school friend and dealing with some emotional trauma from the past.

What I thought 💭:

This was a super fast read. It was quirky and oddly enduring. Rory is trying to figure herself out, while also dealing with messy relationships and past trauma (check those trigger warnings, bbs). Definitely recommend!

“I forgot. I’m so used to being reminded how ugly a place the world can be, I forgot it could be beautiful, too.”

... Read moreAfter diving into Rachel Harrison's 'Such Sharp Teeth,' I found myself thinking about it long after I turned the last page. This isn't just another werewolf novel; it's a deeply personal journey wrapped in a delightfully quirky and sometimes brutal package. The original review touched on its blend of horror comedy and rom-com, but I wanted to share a bit more about what makes this book truly shine and why it resonated so much with me. What truly captivated me was Rory's transformation, not just into a werewolf, but into a stronger, more self-aware individual. The novel uses the supernatural element as a powerful metaphor for dealing with inherited trauma and finding your own identity amidst difficult family dynamics. I’ve read many stories about characters grappling with past hurts, but Harrison's approach felt fresh and intensely relatable, even with the fur and fangs involved. It’s a raw exploration of anger, vulnerability, and the messy process of healing. The 'horror comedy' aspect is perfectly balanced. There are genuinely laugh-out-loud moments, especially when Rory is clumsily navigating her new life and powers. But it never shies away from the graphic and gory realities of being a creature of the night. If you’re sensitive to descriptions of violence or body horror, do approach with caution. However, for me, these elements served to heighten the stakes and ground the fantastical premise in a visceral reality. The 'rom-com' thread is also subtly woven in, offering moments of tenderness and connection that provide a much-needed counterpoint to the darker themes. It's not a typical romance, which I appreciated; it's about finding acceptance and love when you're at your most monstrous, both internally and externally. For anyone who enjoys horror novels with a strong character focus and a dash of dark humor, 'Such Sharp Teeth' is absolutely worth picking up. If you're looking for a werewolf story that breaks the mold, moving beyond typical monster tropes to explore deeper psychological territory, this could be your next favorite read. It's ideal for those who appreciate authors like Grady Hendrix or T. Kingfisher, who blend horror with humor and humanity. I also think it’s a brilliant summer read, perfect for those long days when you want something compelling but also a little bit wild, much like the red moon on the book's cover suggests. My own experience with the book was incredibly engaging. It was a fast read for me too, just as mentioned in the article, but it left a lasting impression. It’s a book about embracing your true self, even the parts that feel monstrous, and learning to forgive. I finished it feeling surprisingly hopeful, despite the blood and bite marks. This werewolf novel is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest places, beauty and transformation can be found.
