Since I was diagnosed with PCOS I decided I would do what I can to live a low-tox lifestyle.

I have been swapping things around my house to products that have clean and simple ingredients. Loving a completely non-toxic lifestyle can be hard and expensive so I am just making small changes that can help avoid ingredients that are harmful to my body and hormones.

Here are some easy and affordable non-toxic food swaps you can try in your own home!

... Read moreWhen I first started my journey to a non-toxic lifestyle after my PCOS diagnosis, it felt like a huge mountain to climb. Everywhere I looked, there were ingredients I couldn't pronounce, and the idea of revamping my entire pantry felt overwhelming and expensive. But I quickly learned that it doesn't have to be drastic. Small, intentional swaps make a massive difference, and they can be surprisingly affordable! One of the first and easiest changes I made was to my cooking oils. I used to reach for vegetable oils without a second thought, but once I learned about their inflammatory properties, I knew I needed a healthier cooking oil option. That's when I discovered avocado oil. I specifically look for brands like Simply Nature avocado oil or any offering 100% pure avocado oil that is expeller-pressed, avoiding blends or anything with unnecessary additives. It has a high smoke point, making it perfect for everything from sautéing veggies to roasting chicken. It's truly a game-changer for reducing hidden toxins in your everyday meals. Another big win for me was finding cleaner dairy alternatives, especially almond milk. For years, I just grabbed whatever vanilla almond milk was on sale, not realizing how many extra ingredients were hiding in there – thickeners like carrageenan or gums, and tons of added sugar. Now, I always check the label for almond milk carton minimal ingredients. Ideally, I look for just filtered water, almonds, and maybe a touch of sea salt. If I want a delicious vanilla almond milk, I’ll occasionally opt for one with natural vanilla extract and no added sweeteners. It makes a huge difference in how my body feels, and it's a simple swap that drastically cuts down on processed ingredients. Beyond these, I've also experimented with things like making my own homemade butter when I have the time, or at least choosing organic, grass-fed butter. The difference in flavor and nutrient profile is remarkable. And for sweeteners, ditching refined white sugar for natural alternatives like 100% pure maple syrup has been a sweet success. These simple non-toxic choices are not only better for my hormones but also taste incredible. To make these low-tox recipe swaps easier, my best advice is to become a label reader. Don't be intimidated! Just start by looking at the first few ingredients. If you see a long list of chemicals, artificial colors, or excessive sugars, it might be time to find an alternative. Focus on whole foods as much as possible, and don't feel pressured to change everything overnight. Even swapping out just one item a week can lead to a completely transformed pantry over time. It’s about progress, not perfection, and finding joy in nourishing your body with cleaner, simpler ingredients. These small steps have truly empowered me on my low-tox living journey, and I hope they inspire you too!
