... Read moreAnxiety is often misunderstood as something purely negative that we need to eliminate completely. However, from my own experience and learning, anxiety is actually an important signal our mind sends when we perceive potential threat or danger—it’s literally wired into us to keep us alive. Instead of trying to fight or avoid anxiety, the most helpful approach is to acknowledge it and change how we relate to it. I found that many people, including myself, tend to respond to anxiety with resistance or fear, which often amplifies the feeling rather than calms it. This aligns with the concept of inhibitory learning in exposure therapy, where rather than trying to suppress or get rid of anxious feelings, you gradually expose yourself to them and learn to accept these sensations as part of the human experience. This process helps to rewire your brain to see anxiety as less threatening and more manageable. In practice, this means welcoming feelings of anxiety instead of hating or fearing them. When you allow these feelings in without judgment, they tend to become a lot less stressful over time. This shift in perspective helped me understand that anxiety is not the problem itself; often, it's our reaction to anxiety that causes the most distress. By creating a different relationship with anxiety—viewing it as a natural human emotion rather than an enemy—we can reduce its hold over us and improve overall well-being. Therapy and self-help strategies that focus on acceptance and exposure rather than avoidance have been a game changer for many. Remember, the goal isn't to become anxiety-free but to live fully despite anxiety. Sharing this understanding with others can be empowering and encourage a healthier dialogue around mental health. If you’re dealing with anxiety, consider trying small steps to face your anxious thoughts instead of pushing them away. It might be uncomfortable at first, but this approach can foster resilience and help you regain control over your emotional responses.
