8 things in Beijing that just make sense!

7/9 Edited to

... Read moreDuring my trip to Beijing, I found that understanding local habits and using the right tools made my experience much smoother and more enjoyable. One tip that truly stood out was bringing your own toilet paper, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer when exploring old hutongs, as not all public restrooms are stocked or well-maintained. Collecting ink pad stamps (盖章) at landmarks became a fun way to keep memories of different places visited, turning sightseeing into a creative activity. I highly recommend getting a stamp book early and looking out for shops that offer these unique mementos—some are free, like at Tiananmen Square. Food-wise, Beijing's hotpot or 'Shuàn Ròu' is quite different from what many travelers expect since it uses a clear broth rather than a rich, flavored soup base. While it might not be everyone's favorite, trying this traditional dining style really connects you with local taste and culture. Another useful insight was the importance of apps. WeChat and Alipay handled almost all payments, minimizing cash usage. For navigation, Amap was much more reliable than Google Maps when moving around the city. Also, using Dianping helped me find authentic restaurants with good reviews, and Xiao Hong Shu (RedNote) was perfect for discovering trending spots. A unique aspect of Beijing life is the cultural norm around 'dá kǎ'—checking in by taking photos and scanning QR codes, which sometimes led to freebies or discounts. This was an enjoyable way to engage with the local scene, especially in cafes and shops. Beijing's springtime brings floating poplar and willow snow, which can affect those with asthma, so I made sure to carry a mask to avoid irritation. Lastly, encountering common smoking and spitting practices was surprising but prepared me to adapt and remain comfortable during outdoor activities. All these insights combined made my trip not just a simple visit but an enriching cultural immersion. If you plan to explore Beijing, keep these tips in mind—they'll help you navigate the city confidently and appreciate its unique customs.
