Don’t use God to justify your wrongdoings

It’s a conversation I’ve had with so many friends, and honestly, it can be really disheartening to see. We all stumble and make mistakes – that's part of being human. But when I hear someone use their faith as a shield, saying things like “God’s got me, so I don’t need to worry about consequences,” or even worse, “God understands, so it’s okay,” it truly makes me pause. True faith, in my experience, isn’t about finding loopholes or excuses for our actions; it’s about embracing the journey of growth, repentance, and genuine accountability. So, why do people sometimes lean on religion to justify their wrongdoings? I think it often stems from a misunderstanding of grace and mercy. Some might mistakenly view God's unconditional love as a free pass, rather than a powerful motivator for transformation. They might believe that because God forgives, the need for personal responsibility or facing the natural consequences of their actions diminishes. But if we look at it with a bit of logic, genuine faith encourages us to strive for better, to acknowledge our imperfections, and to actively seek alignment with divine principles. It’s about a relationship where we are loved despite our flaws, but not encouraged to remain in them. The internal conviction the Holy Spirit brings isn't a condemnation, but a loving nudge towards what's right, guiding us back to a path of integrity and accountability. From a Christian perspective, the Bible is clear on the concept of reaping what we sow. This isn't about a vengeful God, but a reflection of the spiritual and natural laws of the universe. Our actions have consequences, both for ourselves and for those around us. Genuine faith doesn't exempt us from this; it equips us to navigate it with grace, humility, and a commitment to making amends where necessary. It's about recognizing our faults, seeking forgiveness, and actively working to change our hearts and habits. It’s not about finding ways to rationalize our behavior, but about acknowledging when we miss the mark and striving to do better, guided by God's truth. Thinking about the weight of our wrongdoings, it reminds me of moments in scripture where individuals are brought face-to-face with God's immense holiness, and their immediate response is a profound realization of their own unworthiness and sinfulness. This isn't a moment for justification, but for deep, humbling self-reflection. It’s knowing that His holiness reveals our imperfections, leading us to true repentance and a desire for cleansing, not excuses. It’s a call to honest introspection: Am I genuinely seeking God's will and striving for righteousness, or am I unintentionally (or intentionally) bending His teachings to fit my own desires and avoid uncomfortable truths? True faith empowers us to confront our shadows, not hide behind them.
