Spend a day with me as a psychiatry resident 🌸👩🏻‍⚕️

Spend a typical day with me as a psychiatry resident physician ! My workday varies depending on if I'm inpatient or outpatient that day. Today I was covering the inpatient psychiatric unit so I typically round on my patients, staff the cases with the attending physician and then work on notes/ collateral/ more patient care. When time comes I handoff to the resident on call and either work out before work or in this case after work. Then, dinner with husband and time to wind down and do it again the next day !

... Read moreHey everyone! So many of you have asked what a psychiatry resident's daily life really looks like, especially on an inpatient unit. It's definitely a juggling act, but incredibly rewarding. My day often kicks off quite early, even before hitting the hospital floor. I usually spend some time reviewing patient charts from the night before, getting a head start before morning rounds. The inpatient psychiatric unit is a dynamic environment, and you need to be prepared for anything. We see a wide range of conditions, from acute psychoses to severe mood disorders, and the goal is always stabilization and safe discharge planning. Once I'm at the hospital, the first big task is rounding on my patients. This isn't just a quick check-in; it's about connecting, assessing their mental status, discussing their progress, and adjusting treatment plans as needed. Each patient has a unique story and set of needs, so active listening and empathy are crucial. It's during these rounds that I gather the information I'll later use when staffing the cases with the attending physician. This is where the learning truly happens – presenting cases, discussing diagnostic dilemmas, and formulating comprehensive treatment strategies under the guidance of experienced psychiatrists. It's a key part of becoming a competent psychiatry resident doctor. After rounds and staffing, a significant chunk of my day is dedicated to working on notes, collateral, and more patient care. You wouldn't believe the amount of documentation involved! Electronic health records can be demanding, but thorough notes are essential for continuity of care and legal reasons. Gathering collateral information – speaking with family members, previous providers, or even emergency contacts – is vital for a complete picture of the patient's history and current situation. It helps us understand the context of their illness beyond what they can tell us in the hospital. The workload can be intense, and it's easy to feel overwhelmed. That's why the end-of-day handoff to the resident on call is so important. It ensures seamless care transitions and allows me to confidently step away knowing my patients are in good hands. Beyond the hospital walls, maintaining some semblance of work-life balance is critical for any life of a psychiatry resident. As the OCR captured, my 'Gym!! Me time' is non-negotiable. Whether it's a quick session before work or blowing off steam after a long shift, physical activity helps me clear my head and de-stress. And honestly, there's nothing better than unwinding with 'Dinner & relax' with my husband. It's those small moments of normalcy that help me recharge and prepare to do it all again the next day. This career is challenging, but helping people navigate their mental health journeys is incredibly fulfilling. If you're considering a path as a psychiatry resident doctor, be prepared for hard work, but also for profound opportunities to make a real difference.
