What I’m prescribed
Managing mental health conditions such as OCD, major depressive disorder (MDD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often involves a combination of medication and therapy. One common class of medications prescribed for these disorders is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which help regulate serotonin levels in the brain to improve mood and reduce anxiety. From my experience, starting SSRIs can be a significant step toward regaining control over challenging symptoms. It’s important to remember that finding the right medication and dosage may take time and require close communication with your psychiatrist. Side effects can occur but often lessen with continued use or dosage adjustments. In addition to SSRIs, other medications might be prescribed depending on individual symptoms and responses to treatment. Combining medication with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or exposure therapy especially in OCD and PTSD cases can dramatically improve outcomes. Living with these diagnoses can feel overwhelming, but consistent treatment and support make a difference. Tracking your symptoms, medication effects, and mood changes can empower you to have productive conversations with your healthcare provider and optimize your care. Recovery is a journey and every step, including understanding what medications are prescribed and how they help, is valuable toward improving mental well-being.

You are absolutely amazing for taking steps on your own to help yourself! I am so proud of you! I am a 56F who has suffered from anxiety since I was a child. I have also had seasons of severe depression. I sought out help when I was 22, after suffering on and off in HS/College from debilitating episodes of anxiety. I was prescribed Zoloft, however, it was not a therapeutic dose. Anxiety has always been the more prevalent issue for me. My story is quite long; let me just leave you with this epiphany… in my mid 30s, after having a second child, I was finally referred to a psychiatrist. I never would’ve thought to go to one on my own. I was prescribed Xanax. The memory of taking that first pill during an anxiety attack is seared in my mind – 20 minutes… In 20 minutes I could feel the medication working. It felt like it was working to rid the anxiety from my head traveling down through my body and just melting it all away. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry -I had suffered through decades… 20 minutes after taking this one little pill gave me the relief I had so so longed & prayed for. Never give up in your fight. Psychiatry/psychology has come a long way in the last 20+ years. Always remember – you are awesome, you are amazing, you are beautiful, AND – you are enough just the way you are🥰🥰
