Day in the life of a psychiatry resident doctor 👩🏻‍⚕️

Spend a day with me as a psychiatry resident doctor ! I like to get my workout out of the way in the morning, then shower, refuel, and get to work ! Currently inpatient psychiatry unit with half day outpatient, so saw all of my patients. Sneaked in some lunch and did clinic! When i'm done for the day the plan is usually dinner, unwind and sleep early to wake up early ! What does your day look like?

... Read moreIt's so great to share a glimpse into my day as a psychiatry resident! Many of you might wonder what really goes on beyond the quick recap of workouts, patient rounds, and winding down. I know when I was looking into this field, I had so many questions about the true 'life of a psychiatry resident' and the 'psychiatry lifestyle.' It’s definitely a demanding but incredibly rewarding path. When I say I 'saw all my patients' in the inpatient psychiatry unit, it means a lot more than just quick check-ins. On inpatient, we manage acute psychiatric crises, conduct detailed assessments, formulate treatment plans, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including nurses, social workers, and therapists. This requires a unique set of 'skills of a psychiatrist' – things like active listening, empathy, crisis management, and thorough diagnostic interviewing. Every patient’s story is different, and understanding their journey and helping them stabilize is a profound experience. Then, during my half-day outpatient clinic, the focus shifts to longer-term management, medication adjustments, and psychotherapy for patients with chronic mental health conditions. This shows the broad 'MD psychiatry scope' we cover, from acute to chronic care. One of the biggest questions I often get is about 'psychiatry work-life balance.' As you saw, fitting in an 'early morning workout' is crucial for me. It’s not just about physical health; it’s my mental reset button before a demanding day. And yes, 'fuel of course' – a good breakfast and a solid 'lunch & clinic' meal are non-negotiable to keep my energy up. Residency is intense, and sometimes work-life balance feels like a myth, but it's about intentional choices. Prioritizing my 'dinner, unwind, sleep early' routine helps me recover and be ready for the next day. It’s about building sustainable habits within a busy schedule. For anyone curious about 'how to become a psychiatrist,' remember it's a long journey involving medical school followed by dedicated psychiatry residency. The 'psychiatrist daily tasks' are varied and can range from conducting therapy sessions, prescribing medication, performing consultations for other medical services, to attending didactic lectures and supervising junior residents. It's truly a blend of art and science. The unique aspect of psychiatry is the deep human connection and the privilege of helping people navigate some of their most challenging moments. It's not always easy, but the privilege of being a psychiatry resident, supporting individuals through their mental health journeys, makes every challenging day worthwhile. What aspects of a doctor's life are you most curious about?
