Choosing a career your family is hesitant about 🧠👩🏻⚕️
I grew up in an Armenian community, which means mental health was rarely talked about or valued - this served as a big reason I wanted to become a Psychiatrist, so I can help break the stigma. Some ways I helped talk to my parents about the decision:
1. explain the WHY so they understand your POV
2. Allow them space to ask questions- this way YOU can also understand and address their concerns. I found out most of the concerns came stemmed from fear of the unknown
3. educate ! This is a perfect moment to advocate for your specialty
Choosing a career in mental health can often come with family hesitance, particularly in cultures where mental health is stigmatized. To help bridge this gap, start by articulating your passion clearly. Explain why psychiatry matters to you and how it can impact lives positively. Engaging in an open dialogue allows your family to express their concerns, often rooted in misunderstandings or a fear of the unknown. Additionally, empathy is essential when discussing career choices with parents. Acknowledge their feelings and validate their concerns, but remain steadfast in your commitment to your goals. This approach not only fosters understanding but also builds trust. If they see your dedication and desire to help others, they may gradually become more supportive of your decision. Lastly, seek out a mentor in the field of psychiatry who has navigated similar challenges. Their insights and experiences can provide invaluable guidance and reinforce your resolve. Remember, pursuing a less traditional career path can be daunting, but with patience and communication, you can encourage your family to embrace your aspirations.
