Why you should still work out in residency 💪

Starting my day with a workout before a 24-hour shift isn’t about pushing myself to the limit—it’s about grounding myself. Those 30 minutes of movement clear my mind, boost my energy, and remind me that self-care matters, even on the busiest days. Showing up for myself helps me show up for my patients. 💪🩺

... Read moreMaintaining a workout routine during residency can be transformative for medical professionals. Early morning exercise not only fosters physical health but also significantly enhances mental clarity. Many doctors face long hours, and their well-being often takes a back seat to demanding schedules. Engaging in physical activity helps reduce stress, increases energy levels, and establishes a routine that promotes discipline. Research indicates that regular exercise can combat burnout, a common issue in the medical field. It can be as simple as a 30-minute workout to effectively prepare for a 24-hour shift. Incorporating activities such as yoga, running, or strength training can lead to improved focus and resilience, ultimately benefiting patient care. Prioritizing self-care through workouts can help physicians stay connected to their purpose, enabling them to perform more effectively in their demanding roles. Whether you're a resident in psychiatry or another specialty, integrating fitness into your daily routine is a vital strategy for long-term health and professional success. Don't underestimate how a little movement can make a world of difference!
