Managing patient load without losing focus 👩🏻‍⚕️

Handling a heavy patient load can feel overwhelming, but staying organized keeps me grounded. Here’s my approach:

📝 Prioritize: I start by identifying the most urgent tasks—safety and stability come first.

⏱ Time Block: Setting specific times for charting and follow-ups helps me stay on track.

💬 Communicate: I lean on my team, delegating when appropriate and staying updated.

💆‍♀️ Take Breaks: Even a few deep breaths between patients helps me reset and refocus.

Staying calm and systematic makes all the difference. What’s your favorite way to stay organized? 🩺✨

... Read moreIt's a feeling many of us medical professionals know all too well: that constant battle of "Too many Patients not enough time?" The pressure can be immense, and it often feels like you're constantly playing catch-up. I've been in the trenches, feeling overwhelmed and stretched thin, but over time, I've developed a few practices that genuinely make a difference. It’s not about working harder, but smarter, and crucially, protecting your own well-being. When I talk about prioritizing and learning to "Identify urgent tasks," it's more than just a bullet point. It's about training your clinical eye to quickly assess what truly needs immediate attention versus what can wait or be delegated. For instance, in psychiatry, a patient in acute crisis needing safety planning immediately takes precedence over a routine follow-up. This mental triage isn't always easy, especially when you have a dozen things vying for your attention, but it's a skill that saves lives and keeps your day from spiraling. I often take a moment before rounds to quickly scan my patient list and flag anyone with new concerns or urgent needs. Then there’s the magic of "Time block !!" This has been a game-changer for me. Instead of letting charting spill into my patient time, I designate specific blocks—say, an hour after morning rounds and another hour before I leave—solely for documentation. During these blocks, my phone is on silent, and I focus entirely on getting my notes done. I also block out 15-20 minutes in the afternoon for administrative tasks like returning non-urgent calls or reviewing labs. It sounds rigid, but it actually creates more flexibility elsewhere because I know exactly when critical tasks will get done. It also helps avoid that dreaded feeling of having a mountain of paperwork looming. "Communicate well" is another cornerstone, and honestly, it’s about leaning on your team. You can't do it all alone. This means clear, concise handovers, not being afraid to ask for help when you're swamped, and effectively delegating tasks to nurses, residents, or support staff when appropriate. For example, if I'm bogged down with a complex case, I'll clearly communicate to my team what I need help with—perhaps reviewing a patient's history or contacting a family member. It lightens your load and ensures better patient care through collaboration. Having quick access to resources, like my trusty purple DSM-5 reference book, also helps me communicate more effectively with colleagues and patients about diagnoses and treatment plans, especially during those focused work moments. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, are the "Take breaks & breaths." It’s so easy to push through, thinking you don’t have time for a break. But trust me, those five minutes of stepping away, grabbing a coffee, or just doing a few deep breathing exercises can reset your entire perspective. I try to make it a non-negotiable, even if it's just walking to the bathroom and taking a minute to look at myself in the mirror and remind myself to breathe deeply. It combats compassion fatigue and keeps me from burning out. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup, especially in a demanding field like medicine. Prioritizing these small moments for yourself isn't selfish; it's essential for sustainable practice and providing the best care.
