How’s the transit system in Japan really?

I’m finally jetting off to Japan next week for my first ever solo trip, and I’m equal parts excited and nervous! One big question is yen exchange. I’ve heard Japan is still pretty cash-heavy, especially for smaller shops, temples, or street food. Should I convert money here in the US first, or is it easier/cheaper to withdraw from ATMs there? Worried about airport exchange rates being a scam, but also don’t want to be stuck without cash if my card gets rejected somewhere.

Also, any general tips for a first-time free traveler? I’ll be hitting Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. How’s the transit system really? Are there cultural norms I should brush up on (like bowing, dining etiquette, or quiet trains)?

... Read moreTraveling to Japan for the first time can be both thrilling and daunting, especially when it comes to understanding the transit system. Japan is renowned for its punctual and efficient public transportation, including trains, subways, and buses. The Japan Rail Pass can be an economical choice for travelers planning to hop around between cities. Additionally, learning a few essential phrases in Japanese, like ‘Sumimasen’ (Excuse me) or ‘Arigatou’ (Thank you), can go a long way in showing respect for the local culture. Remember that cash is still king in many smaller shops and food stalls, so it's wise to carry yen on hand. With airports usually having currency exchange services, it's often recommended to exchange just enough to get you through your first few days. Before embarking on your journey, familiarize yourself with cultural norms such as bowing and dining etiquette; these practices demonstrate respect and enhance your interactions with locals. Don't forget to access public transport applications or maps that can help you navigate the intricate train lines effortlessly. Wait till you get there you get a better exchange rate! Don’t do it at the airport either find a 7/11 they have atms that take us cards and withdrawal cash
