High achievers are often oscillating between burnout and high functioning depression yet many don’t know the difference between the two. And that’s why I conducted the first peer reviewed study in the world on HfD and wrote an instant bestselling book 📕 on how to heal. That book is now in over 20 countries and 17 languages and counting.

I am often asked how burnout and High Functioning depression (HFD) differ. Burnout by definition is a workplace phenomenon. The workplace causes the symptoms of low motivation, fatigue, irritability and low concentration. When you leave the workplace for a period, the bǔrnout should improve because the workplace is no longer present. You improve because you no longer feel the grind but you may still be exhausted. The occupational stress leads to symptoms of bürnout where’s something within the individual leads to symptoms of HFD.

HFD is different from burnout because when people with HFD leave the workplace they cannot slow down. They continue to work and to busy themselves. Why? Because even in the absence of the workplace the root of the issue is still present because the root of the issue comes from within the individual, NOT from the workplace.

In my study, the first peer reviewed published study in HFD I found a correlation between trauma and HFD.The theory is that of us with unprocessed past pain or träuma cope with it by avoiding dealing with it. We use work as a busying mechanism. We can’t relax when we are not working we feel empty when we sit still. So we Do Do Do. Even outside of the workplace we are busy.

Those of us with HFD busy themselves even when not at work. We are humans doing instead of human beings. This pathological productivity shows up in ways where you see us having a ton of overcommitments, side projects and taking on other people’s issues. We can’t sit still, even outside of work and on weekends or holidays.

We often go through the motions and experience anhedonia, a lack of joy and interest.

... Read moreIn my personal experience working with individuals who struggle with both burnout and high functioning depression, I have noticed that the distinction often lies in how they cope with stress and internal pain. Burnout tends to improve when a person steps away from workplace pressures, allowing physical and mental rest to take effect. However, for those with High Functioning Depression, the challenge runs much deeper. Even away from work, these individuals feel compelled to stay busy, as inactivity triggers discomfort and a sense of emptiness. One powerful realization is that many people with HFD use 'doing' as a distraction from unresolved trauma or emotional pain. This constant busyness is a coping mechanism, but unfortunately, it prevents true healing. Overcommitment to projects and taking on others’ issues might seem productive on the surface but can exacerbate feelings of exhaustion and disconnection from oneself. Another aspect I’ve observed is the experience of anhedonia in HFD—going through daily routines without the ability to find joy or interest. This contrasts with burnout, where motivation is low primarily due to external stressors but may rebound with rest. Addressing High Functioning Depression requires a compassionate approach that focuses on acknowledging and working through past trauma, rather than just reducing workload or stress. Therapeutic strategies like trauma-informed therapy, mindfulness practices, and learning to embrace stillness can gradually help individuals reconnect with their feelings and regain emotional balance. By understanding these nuanced differences, people can seek the right kind of support and begin a more effective healing journey. Watching educational discussions such as those by experts on platforms like YouTube can further enhance awareness and provide practical tools for managing both burnout and HFD.

High achievers procrastinate too — and it’s not because they’re lazy. It’s because perfectionism creates pressure. And pressure activates the brain’s threat response. When your nervous system thinks something has to be perfect, it stops seeing the task as creative… and starts seeing it as danger

High achievers don’t struggle with motivation 🤔
