The beginning of July is always difficult for me because I remember how lonely and stressed I was when I started internship. Intern year in itself is an adjustment for medical students because they graduate medical school in June and then they start their first month as a doctor in training in the hospital. It took me a while to share this experience because it was so terrible but when I began to talk about it with others, I realized that other people had the opportunity to heal too.

Razism in medicine is highly prevalent, with up to 52% of healthcare workers identifying it as a major problem or crisis. It manifests systemically through unequal treatment, diagnostic delays, and race-based clinical algorithms that lead to poorer health outcomes for marginalized communities.

... Read moreStarting my medical internship was a period filled with overwhelming emotions—loneliness, stress, and the weight of expectations. For Black medical trainees like myself, these challenges are often amplified by systemic racism embedded in medical institutions. Experiencing subtle prejudices and overt discrimination made the adjustment even harder during those first turbulent months. Racism in medicine isn’t just a personal hurdle; it’s a widespread issue affecting healthcare workers and patients alike. Studies show that over half of healthcare professionals recognize racial bias as a critical problem, with marginalized groups facing unequal treatment, delayed diagnoses, and biased clinical decision-making. This systemic issue not only affects career progression but also leads to poorer health outcomes for BIPOC communities. Sharing my story and opening up about my experiences helped me find healing, and it encouraged others to speak out as well. Mental health in medicine, especially among Black doctors and trainees, is often overlooked. The cultural expectation to remain resilient can make it challenging to ask for support or admit vulnerability. However, acknowledging these struggles is essential for personal wellbeing and the advancement of a more equitable healthcare system. During BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s important to shine a light on these experiences and advocate for systemic change. Creating supportive networks among Black doctors and engaging in conversations about racism and mental health can foster a healthier, more inclusive environment. By addressing these issues openly, we can begin to dismantle the barriers that contribute to trauma during critical career phases like internship. If you are a medical trainee or professional facing similar challenges, know that you’re not alone. Seeking mentorship, therapy, and peer support can make a tangible difference. Together, we can build a community that not only survives but thrives despite the obstacles posed by systemic racism in medicine.

I feel like communication is such a tall order these days. we all feel like we need to beat around the bush, be indirect, not say how we really feel, and I think this leads to the majority of problematic relationships or us just simply getting hurt. these are some great questions to really understa
