Both reactions stemmed from my nervous system's attempt to protect me based on previous experiences. Our nervous system operates through survival mechanisms that can trigger fight, flight, or freeze responses, which often play out in how we handle money. This explains why some people might struggle with financial decision-making despite knowledge of budgeting or saving. Emotional triggers linked to upbringing, trauma, or scarcity mindset can override rational planning. Recognizing these patterns is the first step toward gaining control. In practical terms, slowing down your reactions and becoming mindful about your financial decisions can help. Techniques such as deep breathing, journaling your money thoughts, or even working with a trauma-informed financial coach can rewire your responses. Over time, you can change your money story from one driven by fear or survival to one rooted in empowerment and conscious choice. This perspective also reframes financial literacy: it's not just about numbers but about healing your relationship with money by understanding your nervous system’s role. Integrating this awareness can lead to improved financial freedom and peace of mind.
