Why am I eating Korean food in Mexico

2024/7/23 Edited to

... Read moreYou know, one of the most exciting parts of traveling for a business trip, especially to a vibrant city like Mexico City, is the unexpected culinary discoveries! On my second day here, after a busy morning filled with meetings, and yes, I even squeezed in a gym session as my OCR notes reminded me – “came straight to the gym” – my coworker surprised me with a lunch invitation. I honestly expected some fantastic local Mexican fare, which I absolutely adore, but to my delight, we ended up at an authentic Korean restaurant right here in the heart of Mexico City. It was truly an unexpected find! It felt like stepping into a little piece of Seoul. The moment we walked in, the rich aroma of sizzling bulgogi, spicy kimchi, and savory japchae hit me, instantly transporting my senses. We were seated quickly, and the menu, while having Spanish translations, featured all the classic dishes I've grown to love. From bibimbap and tteokbokki to a fantastic selection of banchan – those delightful small side dishes – everything promised a genuine experience. My coworker, knowing my love for Korean food, suggested we try their kimchi jjigae, a hearty and spicy stew, and it was absolutely perfect, warming and comforting on what had been a rather hectic “busy day.” We also shared some crispy and flavorful mandu (dumplings), which were a highlight. The flavors were so genuine, the ingredients tasted fresh, and the preparation felt traditional; it was hard to believe we weren't in Korea itself! It really highlighted how truly global and diverse the food scene in Mexico City has become. The ambiance was lively but not overwhelmingly so, with a mix of soft Korean music in the background and the chatter of happy diners. The service was incredibly friendly and attentive, making the whole “lunch” experience even more enjoyable. Despite it being a weekday, the place had a buzzing energy, filled with both locals who clearly knew the good spots and what seemed like other international visitors. It’s always a good sign when you see a diverse crowd enjoying the food, which often speaks to its authenticity and quality. This experience was a wonderful, much-needed break from our “businesstrip” schedule. Finding such a gem was totally unexpected but so welcome, a true culinary adventure. I often think about how much you can discover just by walking around and keeping an open mind, much like when I explored “downtown” later that evening and found “this pretty view” on my walk back to the “JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City Polanco.” It's the same with food – sometimes the best experiences are the ones you don't plan, the hidden treasures. If you're ever in “Mexico City” and find yourself craving some truly authentic Korean cuisine, I highly recommend venturing out and exploring the local international food scene. Don't be afraid to ask locals for recommendations or do a quick search; based on my experience, you might just find your new favorite place. It was a fantastic way to recharge and explore the city's diverse culinary landscape beyond its renowned local dishes. My “todays expense $32.29” for lunch felt very reasonable for the quality, authenticity, and overall memorable experience. It just goes to show, you never know what delicious surprises await you when you travel!
