At the beginning of the 19th century, women's hats of the "Neapolitan bonnet" model came into fashion. The purpose of these hats was to protect women's heads from the scorching rays of the sun. But then the brims of the hats were lengthened somewhat.

This happened because the rules of French etiquette prescribed the exclusion of public kisses. That is where the expression "tête à tête" came from, "tête - a - tête", which translated from French meant: together, alone with each other, without strangers, face to face.

Kissing in such a hat was very inconvenient, however, these rules were followed.
