On August 26 local time, the UN Security Council held a meeting on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question. In his remarks, Ambassador Fu Cong, China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, pointed out that Israel's recent push to launch tenders for settlement construction in the "E1 area" of the West Bank severely undermines Palestine's territorial integrity and the foundation of the two-state solution. He also expressed grave concern over Israel's renewed escalation of suppression against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).Ambassador Fu stated that any attempt to de facto annex the West Bank is unacceptable, and that all settlement activities violate international law and Security Council resolutions and must be stopped immediately. China urges Israel to fulfill its obligations as the occupying power and curb settler violence rather than condoning and tolerating it in disguise. The international community must promptly halt further harm to the Palestinian people, rescue the political prospects of the two-state solution, and make every effort to achieve lasting peace.
