three adhd reading apps inlove

app 1) befreed

this app has been a literal lifesaver in my reading life. between school and work, i wouldn't have time to read as many booms as i wanted, and i wasn't retaining most of the information i was reading. then i found befreed. with flashcards, 20 minute podcasts, and 30 minute deep dives, i am actually actually retaining information and i am reading wayyy more books than i was a few months ago

app 2) libby

have a library card? dont have the time to head to your local library? no problem! this app allows you to loan all digital copies of all the books your library has and loan any audiobook copies they have- all from your phone or kindle.

app 3) ground news

sorting through wayy to many news sites a day, just to find out it was a biased source was getting on my nerves. i downloaded ground news, set my preferences, and now i get bidaily updates about the most important stories from around the world, with a rating of its political bias and background.

... Read moreAs someone navigating life with ADHD, I know firsthand the unique challenges that come with reading. It’s not just about finding the time; it's about maintaining focus, battling distractions, and truly retaining what you've read. That's why discovering the right tools has been a game-changer for my reading journey. While the apps I mentioned above – BeFreed, Libby, and Ground News – have revolutionized my approach, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into how they specifically tackle ADHD reading hurdles and share some extra tips I've picked up along the way. Let's talk more about BeFreed. The app's promise of improving 'reading speed 10x' isn't just hyperbole for those of us with ADHD. It's about efficiency and engagement. For me, traditional reading often means my mind wanders, and I have to re-read passages multiple times. BeFreed's condensed formats, like flashcards and short podcasts, break down complex information into digestible chunks. This active engagement, almost like a 'chat with the book' feature, keeps my brain stimulated and prevents the dreaded information overload. I've found that these 'flash 16 insights' type summaries really help solidify key concepts, making retention much easier. Plus, the gamified approach to 'build life-changing habits' within the app actually taps into the dopamine-seeking nature of ADHD, encouraging consistent reading streaks. It's not just passive consumption; it's an interactive learning experience. Libby might seem straightforward – free library books – but its ADHD-specific benefits are immense. The sheer convenience of instant digital access means no more forgetting to return books or struggling to get to the library on a 'low executive function' day. More importantly, Libby offers a vast collection of audiobooks. For many with ADHD, listening can be far more effective than traditional reading, especially when paired with a low-stimulus activity like walking or doing chores. This addresses the need for audio solutions directly by offering an accessible alternative. I often find I can absorb more complex narratives when listening, as my brain isn't expending energy on decoding text. Plus, the ability to adjust playback speed is a hidden gem for matching my fluctuating focus levels. Finally, Ground News helps me manage a different kind of reading overload. The constant barrage of news and the effort required to discern bias can be paralyzing for an ADHD brain. Ground News, with its explicit bias ratings, simplifies this process immensely. It allows me to consume news efficiently without getting bogged down in analysis paralysis or feeling overwhelmed by conflicting narratives. This means I'm better informed without the mental fatigue. Beyond these apps, I've also found that creating an 'ADHD aesthetic' for my reading environment makes a huge difference. This isn't just about pretty pictures; it's about designing a space that minimizes distractions and promotes focus. Think noise-canceling headphones, a comfortable chair, good lighting, and keeping clutter to a minimum. I also use physical tools like colored overlays or reading guides to keep my eyes on the line. Breaking down reading tasks into smaller, timed increments (like 20-minute sprints) and incorporating active reading strategies – highlighting, note-taking, or even talking aloud about what I'm reading – transform passive reading into an active, engaging experience. These strategies, combined with the right apps, have truly made reading not just manageable, but genuinely enjoyable.
