Prepare your home for Lunar New Year! 🧧
Preparing Lunar New Year starts well in advance. How we enter the new year sets the tone for the next months to follow, so for me, it’s crucial to start off on the right foot to enjoy a year of luck, health, and prosperity.
🧧Clean the house - proper spring cleaning the entire home so that you sweep away all the bad luck/misfortune and starting the New Year with a fresh start. During the first three days of Lunar New Year, sweeping is avoided as it is believed that luck would stick to the dirt and be swept away along with it.
🧧Food Preparation – this is a time for loved ones to come together and share in the joy and celebration of the holiday. Banh chung is a traditional cake prepared during Lunar New Year. It is made of glutinous rice, pork, mung beans, and other yummy ingredients and paired with picked vegetables.
🧧Decorate the house – colors play a very important role. Red represents happiness, good fortune, and celebration. Decorate the house with colorful flowers, apricot blossom, or kumquat trees. Also, it’s essentially a big bowl stacked high with colorful fruits, including tangerines, mangos, pomelos, papaya and often watermelon. The fruit tray is an offering to one’s ancestors, showing them gratitude and admiration. Most importantly, it brings color to the home and welcomes prosperity and happiness for the coming year.
🧧Preparing gifts – elders and married couples prepare red envelopes (Li Xi) to giveaway to the younger generations. For adults to adults, these gifts are usually basket filled with snacks, tea, and food.

Regarding the 2025 Lunar New Year, the Snake is the zodiac animal, symbolizing wisdom and transformation, encouraging everyone to embrace positive change and growth. Incorporating snake-themed decorations or motifs can add meaning and cultural depth to your celebrations. From my experience, embracing these traditions not only makes the Lunar New Year joyful but also imbues the entire year with hope and prosperity, reflecting a harmonious balance of respect for heritage and personal renewal.
