VISITING WASHINGTON D.C

Probably my favorite weekend getaway so far!

drinks and museums are usually a big one for us.

the amount of museum options here all within walking distance was right up our alley. majority of them are free which is an even bigger plus. I highly recommend visiting Washington DC.

Washington
2024/11/12 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so you're planning your own amazing trip to Washington D.C. like I did, and probably wondering, 'Where should I even stay?' I totally get it! Choosing the right neighborhood can make all the difference, especially if you want to soak up those free museums and enjoy the city's vibrant scene. From my experience, here are a few of the best neighborhoods for tourists, depending on what you're looking for: 1. The National Mall Area (or nearby Downtown/Penn Quarter): If you’re a first-timer or want to be right in the heart of the action, this is your go-to. I loved how everything felt so accessible. Imagine waking up and being just a short walk from the iconic Washington Monument, the National Mall, and the Reflecting Pool. It’s incredibly convenient for hitting up the Smithsonian museums – and yes, most of them are *free*! I spent hours marveling at the dinosaur skeleton at the Natural History Museum and exploring the vast collections. You're also close to the U.S. Capitol Building, and there are plenty of dining options, though they can be a bit pricier. The best part? You can literally walk to so many major sights, just like I mentioned in my initial post. 2. Dupont Circle & Logan Circle: For a more lively vibe with fantastic dining and nightlife, I highly recommend checking out Dupont Circle or its neighboring Logan Circle. These areas have a great mix of historic charm and modern energy. I found some really cool spots for drinks here – perfect after a long day of sightseeing. The streets are bustling with cafes, restaurants, and independent boutiques. It’s well-connected by Metro, making it easy to get to the National Mall, but you also have plenty to explore right in the neighborhood. Plus, you’ll find a good range of hotels, from luxury to more boutique options. It's a truly vibrant place, and I even spotted a fun neon sign like 'this is our happy place' in one of the bars, adding to the cheerful atmosphere. 3. Georgetown: If you're into picturesque streets, high-end shopping, and historic architecture, Georgetown is a must-consider. It feels like stepping into a charming, upscale village within the city. While it’s not directly on a Metro line (you’ll often need to bus or walk a bit from Foggy Bottom Metro), it’s incredibly walkable once you’re there. I loved just strolling through the streets, admiring the beautiful rowhouses and popping into unique shops. It also boasts some fantastic restaurants and cozy bars. It’s a bit farther from the main museum hub, but offers a different, more relaxed pace. 4. Capitol Hill: This neighborhood is perfect if you want a more residential feel with a strong sense of history. You're obviously close to the U.S. Capitol Building and can easily visit the Library of Congress. It’s also home to Eastern Market, a vibrant public market where you can grab fresh produce, crafts, and delicious eats. I enjoyed the blend of historic sites with charming local spots, and even found a beautiful indoor botanical garden nearby, which was a lovely surprise. It’s generally quieter than downtown but still offers easy Metro access to other parts of the city. No matter where you choose to stay, D.C. is an incredible city with so much to offer. I always recommend checking out different hotel options and reading reviews to find the perfect fit for your budget and travel style. Just like I said, those free museums are a huge plus, and having a great base camp makes exploring them even better!
