Going back to school as a nontraditional, first-generation student has been a unique journey filled with both challenges and personal growth. Like many parents, my focus was initially on preparing my kids to return to their own classrooms, and I almost overlooked my own academic commitments. It’s a common struggle balancing family priorities with schoolwork, especially when you’re re-entering the academic environment later than most. One thing I've learned is the importance of time management and setting clear boundaries. I schedule my study hours around my children’s activities and school hours, turning what could be a chaotic routine into a manageable one. This flexibility has been crucial in maintaining my focus and preventing burnout. Being part of the #Classof2027 and embracing the #Senioryear experience has given me a sense of accomplishment and community. Connecting with fellow nontraditional students and first-gens offers mutual support and motivation. Sharing these experiences on social platforms or forums can also help normalize the challenges and celebrate the victories unique to our academic journeys. In addition, self-care is essential. I make sure to carve out small moments just for myself, whether it’s a brief walk, reading, or meditation. This helps maintain mental clarity and resilience. Ultimately, combining parenting with university life is an ongoing learning experience. The key is to acknowledge the challenges openly, seek out supportive networks, and celebrate every milestone, no matter how small. For anyone balancing similar responsibilities, know that you’re not alone, and persistence certainly pays off.
