as a parent, you’re missing out on this #1 skill

The number one skill I teach to so many of the parents I work with is how to genuinely listen to your children and decode their behaviors. Many parents have this innate ability and intuition to understand the meaning behind the actions and words that their children are presenting, it’s just a matter of tuning into it. Questions? Let me know below!

... Read moreFrom my experience as a parent and observer of child behavior, the ability to genuinely listen extends far beyond hearing words—it's about tuning into the deeper messages behind our children's actions. Children often communicate their needs and feelings through behavior rather than words, especially when they lack the vocabulary or confidence to express themselves fully. For example, a tantrum might not just be about frustration over a toy, but a sign of underlying needs such as feeling unheard or overwhelmed. One technique that helped me was observing not just what my child said but how they said it: their tone, body language, and energy levels often revealed more than words alone. I found that when I paused and reflected on what my child might be feeling beneath the surface, I could respond more empathetically and effectively. This improved both our communication and their willingness to share openly. Implementing this active listening approach means creating a safe, non-judgmental space at home where children feel comfortable expressing themselves. It requires patience and practice, as children develop their communication abilities over time—sometimes brain development affects how they process and articulate emotions. Moreover, understanding neuroplasticity reminds us that children continually learn new skills, including communication. Encouraging them by acknowledging their feelings, asking open-ended questions, and validating their experiences can foster stronger emotional intelligence. For parents feeling overwhelmed with behavioral challenges, reframing these actions as messages rather than problems can be transformative. It's about shifting perspective to see your child as communicating valuable information about their inner world. Through this lens, you tap into a parenting 'superpower' that nurtures trust, emotional security, and healthy development.

You are not a sh*tty parent
You don’t react calmly to every situation? That doesn’t make you a sh*tty parent. You’d rather hide in the back of the closet than play dolls with your child (because you hate dolls)—nope, doesn’t mean you’re a sh*tty parent. The fact is, great parenting is not the same thing as perfect parenting.
