Why You Feel Calm…Until You Don’t

You’ll be okay all day…

then one feeling hits your body and everything changes.

Your stomach shifts.

Your chest tightens.

Your mind spirals.

And suddenly you’re not calm anymore.

If you have emetophobia, this isn’t random — it’s your nervous system scanning for danger before anything even happens. Your brain learned that anticipation feels just as unsafe as the event itself.

That’s why one sensation can turn into panic in seconds.

You’re not weak.

You’re not dramatic.

Your body is just tired of being on high alert.

I created my ebook to help you understand why this happens — and how to stop living in fear of the “what if.”

You deserve to feel safe in your body again.

... Read moreLiving with emetophobia can often feel like walking on a tightrope between calm and sudden panic. I’ve personally experienced how even a fleeting sensation, such as an unsettled stomach or a slight chest tightness, can trigger a rapid spiral of anxiety. This isn’t simply about being afraid—it's your nervous system reacting to perceived threats before any real danger occurs. One helpful approach I found was learning about nervous system regulation techniques. Practices such as deep breathing exercises, grounding techniques, and mindfulness meditation can help to interrupt the body’s high-alert state and bring focus back to the present moment. For example, focusing on the rhythm of your breath or anchoring your attention on physical sensations—like feeling your feet on the ground—can lessen the brain’s anticipation of the “what if.” It’s important to remind yourself that these physical sensations, while uncomfortable, are not harmful. Your brain’s learned response to anticipate vomiting or nausea as threatening causes the nervous system to overreact. By understanding this mechanism, you can start to reframe your experience—not as weakness or drama, but as a natural, if exhausting, response to chronic stress. Additionally, connecting with supportive communities online, like those using hashtags #EmetophobiaRecovery and #NervousSystemRegulation, can provide encouragement and shared strategies. Personal stories of recovery reveal that with consistent practice and patience, it’s possible to reduce the power of these panic episodes over time. If you’re struggling with the unpredictable shifts from feeling fine to suddenly overwhelmed, know that you’re not alone and help is available. Learning why you feel calm… until you don’t, is the first step towards reclaiming your safety and peace within your own body.
