I came across this method during a productivity spiral on Pinterest, and it weirdly made sense. The idea? Stop trying to do everything. Just pick 1 big task, 3 medium ones, and 5 small ones. It sounded almost too simple, but I tried it out—and it worked like magic for me.

3️⃣ My Real-Life Example 📝

Here’s what my list looked like yesterday:

✨ 1 big: Finish my group project presentation

🧠 3 medium: Review notes, send feedback to a friend, clean my desk

🌿 5 small: Drink 2L water, reply to 3 DMs, stretch, update planner, choose tomorrow’s outfit

And yes, I ticked them ALL off by 8PM.

I used to spend more energy deciding what to do than actually doing it. With 1-3-5, my focus is already set—I know what matters most that day. Think complex report writing, a major project presentation, deep research, or a crucial brainstorming session. It usually requires sustained focus and might take several hours. This is your number one priority, the task that truly moves the needle forward. 3 Medium Tasks: These are important, but less demanding than your big task. They might be smaller components of a larger project, follow-up emails that require thought, a focused study session on a specific topic, or organizing a particular area of your space. These typically take 30 minutes to an hour each. They contribute to your overall goals without consuming your entire day. 5 Small Tasks: Ah, the magic of the small tasks! These are your quick wins, usually taking 5-15 minutes each. They're often administrative, household chores, or self-care items that clear mental clutter and give you a powerful sense of accomplishment. Replying to DMs, drinking 2L water, stretching, updating your planner, choosing tomorrow's outfit, tidying your desk – these are perfect. My OCR even mentioned how "small tasks give momentum," and it's so true! They build confidence and keep you feeling in control, especially when you're anxious. One of the biggest lessons I learned is that the 1-3-5 Rule isn't rigid; it's a guideline. Some days, you might only have a 1-2-3 list, especially on weekends or when life throws you a curveball. The goal isn't to force exactly 1-3-5 every single day, but to limit your focus and prioritize effectively. If you don't finish a task, don't sweat it! It automatically rolls over to the next day, but remember to reassess its priority when you create your new list. Don't just add it on top; see if it still fits within your new 1-3-5. This adaptability is what makes it so sustainable. Before, I'd waste time staring at a never-ending list, paralyzed by choice. Now, I always know my #1 priority, and that clarity has been revolutionary. It's not just about getting more done; it's about doing the right things and feeling good about your progress.
