HIKE PALI NOTCHES IN O’AHU

With time stamps!

About 1 mile roundtrip, extremely steep.

Hiking level: Extreme (if you don’t mind gettin dirty)

⭐️start the trail by the pay meter in the parking lot.

⭐️ the trail is short but quickly becomes more steep.

⭐️ it will be really windy up at the top so make sure to hold the rope after you scale the rock portion.

⭐️ be prepared to rock climb.

⭐️ you’ll need to use ropes to navigate the rock section.

⭐️ don’t go on a rainy day or if it rained the day previously, the mud will cause you to slip. (

ESPECIALLY AT THE TOP)

⭐️ if you are afraid of heights I recommend stopping at the rock portion when you start going down.

Pali Notches

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard about the Pali Notches hike in Oahu, maybe even seen some intense photos. But let me tell you, experiencing it firsthand is a whole different ballgame! When I first stepped onto that trail, starting right by the parking meter near the lookout, I thought I was ready. The initial path is deceptive; it quickly transforms into an incredibly steep ascent, making you feel every single step. One of the biggest lessons I learned on this extreme trail is the absolute necessity of proper gear. Forget your casual sneakers; you'll need sturdy hiking boots with excellent grip. The ground can be incredibly slippery, especially on the "muddy trail" sections and when you're scrambling over loose rocks. Trust me, a good pair of gloves is also a game-changer for the rope sections. You'll be using those ropes frequently to navigate the "steep ridge" and those thrilling "cliff edge" moments, and protecting your hands makes a huge difference. Don't forget plenty of water – even though it's a short hike, the exertion is high, and you'll be thirsty. A small backpack for essentials like snacks, a first-aid kit, and maybe a light windbreaker (it gets seriously windy at the top!) is also a smart move. The sheer exposure on some parts of the hike is breathtaking, both literally and figuratively. As you ascend, you'll be treated to increasingly panoramic views of Oahu's stunning "green mountains" and valleys. However, this also means there are sections where you're holding onto ropes, looking down at a significant drop. If you're like me and have a bit of a fear of heights, these parts really test your resolve. The original article mentioned turning back if heights are an issue, and I can't stress that enough. It's truly okay to know your limits and enjoy the views from a safer point. Another critical tip: always check the weather. While the article warns against going on a rainy day, it's equally important to know if it rained the day *before*. A "muddy trail" becomes a dangerous slip-and-slide when wet, especially on the steeper descents. I saw some folks struggling immensely because the ground was still slick from an overnight shower. Pacing yourself is also key; this isn't a race. Take breaks, enjoy the views, and conserve your energy for the challenging rock climbing sections. The descent can often feel even harder on your knees and requires just as much focus as the climb up. But despite the challenges, the reward is simply unparalleled. Reaching the "rocky peak" and looking out at the vast expanse of Oahu, surrounded by those iconic Notches, is an experience I'll never forget. It’s an extreme hike for a reason, pushing your physical and mental boundaries, but the sense of accomplishment and the incredible "panoramic views" make every sweaty, muddy step worth it. Just be prepared, be safe, and respect the raw beauty – and challenge – of this unique Oahu adventure.
