A 24-year-old Polish tennis player arrived in Paris last week ranked 114th in the world, with no sponsors, no guaranteed income, and no certainty she could even pay for her hotel room.

She had to win three qualifying matches just to enter the French Open main draw. Prize money is only paid at the end of the tournament, so a Polish sports drink brand quietly stepped in and covered her hotel bill.

Her name is Maja Chwalinska. And today, she plays in the French Open final.

Before this tournament, she had won exactly one Grand Slam main draw match in her entire career. She had battled depression so severe that in 2021 she couldn't get out of bed. She underwent knee surgery in 2022. She spent years grinding through small tournaments across Europe just to stay afloat.

Then she arrived in Paris, won three qualifiers, and kept winning. Zheng Qinwen. Elise Mertens. Maria Sakkari. Diana Shnaider. Nine straight matches. One set dropped.

She is now the first qualifier in French Open history to reach the final. The last time a qualifier reached a Grand Slam final, it was Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open. Raducanu won.

By simply making the final, Chwalinska has earned more prize money than her entire career combined. The runner-up cheque alone is $1.6 million. If she wins today, she takes home $3.25 million.

One week ago she couldn't pay for her hotel room.

... Read moreMaja Chwalinska's inspiring journey at the 2024 French Open is a remarkable example of perseverance and resilience in sports. Qualifiers often face immense challenges, not only in terms of competition but financial strain, as prize money is only awarded after tournaments end. Many lesser-known tennis players struggle to fund travel, accommodation, and training, highlighting the significance of sponsors—even subtle support like the Polish sports drink brand that covered Chwalinska’s hotel costs. Chwalinska’s story resonates beyond tennis fans because it underscores how mental health and physical recovery play critical roles in athletic success. Battling severe depression in 2021, she experienced firsthand how difficult it can be to maintain motivation. Her journey reminds us that athletes are not immune to mental health struggles and that overcoming such barriers can lead to extraordinary achievements. Moreover, her comeback from knee surgery in 2022 adds another layer of grit to her narrative. Sustaining injuries can derail careers, especially for players outside the top rankings who lack extensive medical support. Chwalinska’s steady climb through smaller European tournaments reflects the painstaking grind many players endure before breaking through on the grand stage. Her victory over top seeds like Zheng Qinwen, Elise Mertens, and Maria Sakkari emphasizes her competitive spirit and tactical improvement. This remarkable run parallels Emma Raducanu’s 2021 US Open breakthrough, illustrating how qualifiers can unpredictably dominate major competitions. Chwalinska’s earnings of $1.6 million as a runner-up vastly surpass her entire previous career prize money, showcasing how a single tournament can transform an athlete’s livelihood. This financial boost will likely afford her better coaching, training facilities, and stability. For aspiring tennis players and sports enthusiasts, her story is a heartfelt reminder that with resilience, support, and a bit of luck, overcoming adversity and achieving dreams on the world’s biggest stages is possible.
