The students not only enjoyed hands-on arts and crafts that brightened their classroom but also engaged in meaningful learning about various cultural traditions of light celebrated during the winter season. These included Hanukkah’s bright candles, Kwanzaa’s community lighting, Christmas lights, and the vibrant lanterns of Diwali. Understanding these traditions helped the students appreciate the diversity and significance of light as a symbol of hope, community, and celebration around the world. The mini field trip component offered an experiential learning opportunity, encouraging students to connect classroom knowledge with real-world cultural practices. Miss Jamie’s use of individualized incentive charts for December’s goals in reading and math also fostered motivation and independence among the students. Incorporating themes like the letter L for lights and festive humor such as holiday jokes, the class nurtured a joyful and inclusive environment. Utilization of tools like OSMO further enhanced interactive learning in subjects including math and science. This approach exemplifies how special education can blend academic goals with cultural awareness and creativity to create a rich, well-rounded educational experience for young learners. Looking forward, the upcoming weeks promise continued engaging and diverse activities that will build on these foundations, supporting academic growth and cultural understanding, crucial for fostering empathy and inclusion in the classroom.

I love how you incorporated AAC into your lesson plan activities. The immersive Lights drive and coloring by the fire is so cute and such a good idea.
