Balancing Studies and Personal Life

In my post about student study schedules, I’ve recently received some feedback that there is “no time” to do anything. For example, if a student is in an extracurricular activity, it might be hard for them to balance so much studying.

That’s what I’m here to help with today!

In this post, I’d like to give you tips and tricks on how you can balance your study life, with your personal life!

Read moreAfter sharing my initial tips on balancing studies and personal life, I received so much feedback from you all, especially about the struggle to truly focus when you finally sit down to work. It's a common challenge, and honestly, one I've wrestled with myself! It's not just about finding the time, but about making that time count, right? One of the biggest game-changers for me was really dialing in on my study environment. When I decided to 'set specific times for studying,' that wasn't just about blocking out hours in my calendar. It meant preparing my space to minimize distractions and maximize my concentration. My ideal desk setup always includes my laptop displaying study material, but I make sure to close all unnecessary tabs. Having my trusty keyboard and a fresh notebook with handwritten notes ready makes a huge difference. I even like to add a touch of nature with potted plants – it surprisingly helps create a calming, focused atmosphere. I found that having everything in its place, down to my various pens lined up, made it so much easier to dive into deep work without my mind wandering. Sometimes, during a quick brain break, I'd even doodle a small drawing of a castle in my notebook, just to reset my mind before jumping back in! Another point I can't stress enough, especially for maintaining focus, is truly understanding what it means to 'avoid overcommitting to extracurriculars.' It's so tempting to join everything, but I learned the hard way that spreading myself too thin meant I couldn't give my best to anything, and my focus suffered everywhere. Saying 'no' was tough at first, but it liberated so much mental energy. This allowed me to concentrate fully on the activities I did choose and, crucially, on my academics. Similarly, 'communicating your schedule with family' isn't just about avoiding conflicts; it's about protecting your mental space. When my family knew my study blocks were sacred, I experienced fewer interruptions, which meant fewer breaks in my concentration. And let's talk about 'making time for exercise and hobbies' and 'prioritizing self-care.' These aren't luxuries; they're essential focus boosters. I used to think pushing through exhaustion was productive, but I was wrong. My ability to focus plummeted. Taking a brisk walk, immersing myself in a hobby completely unrelated to studies, or simply ensuring I got enough sleep (true self-care!) dramatically recharged my brain. When I returned to my study notes, my mind was clearer, sharper, and ready to absorb information. It's like giving your internal battery a full charge, making those study sessions much more effective. Beyond these foundational tips, I discovered a few extra tricks for achieving truly deep focus. First, I became ruthless about minimizing digital distractions. My phone went on 'do not disturb,' and I used website blockers during my study sessions. Second, I adopted active learning techniques. Instead of just passively re-reading my notebook with handwritten notes, I'd try to explain concepts out loud or teach them to an imaginary audience. This not only improved my understanding but also forced my brain to engage more deeply, keeping me focused. Lastly, if I felt my mind wandering, a quick two-minute mindfulness break – just focusing on my breath – helped me recenter faster than trying to force concentration. Remember, achieving true balance isn't just about managing time; it's about managing your energy and attention so you can truly thrive in all areas of your life!
