Embryo biopsy for PGT

During an embryo biopsy, roughly 5-10 cells are removed from the embryo’s trophectoderm. The biopsied sample is sent to a genetic testing company, while the embryo is typically frozen in the IVF lab. The genetic testing company analyzes the DNA in the biopsied sample and generates a report based on the analysis. The embryo can remain frozen in liquid nitrogen indefinitely.

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard about PGT biopsy, and maybe like me, you're wondering what the real deal is, beyond just the technical terms. I wanted to share a bit more about why this step felt so crucial in my IVF journey and what it truly meant for us. It’s a big decision, and understanding all the angles can make a huge difference. The main article gives a great overview of the embryo biopsy procedure, explaining how a few cells are removed from the outer layer of the embryo. But why do we even put our precious embryos through this? For us, it was about maximizing our chances of a healthy pregnancy and avoiding heartbreaking outcomes. PGT (Preimplantation Genetic Testing) primarily helps identify embryos with chromosomal abnormalities, known as aneuploidy, before transfer. This means we're trying to find the embryos with the correct number of chromosomes, which significantly increases the chances of a successful implantation and reduces the risk of miscarriage. Imagine being able to select an embryo that has the best possible chance of leading to a live birth – that's the power of PGT-A (aneuploidy screening). Beyond that, for families with known genetic conditions, PGT-M (monogenic/single gene defects) can screen for specific inherited diseases like Cystic Fibrosis or Huntington's disease, offering immense peace of mind. It's like giving our little potential bundles of joy the best possible head start! When I first learned about it, I admit I had concerns. Would removing those cells harm the embryo? It's natural to worry about something so delicate and precious. However, fertility specialists assure us that the embryo after the biopsy is carefully monitored and the procedure, when performed by skilled embryologists, has a very low risk. The cells that were removed are specifically from the trophectoderm, which will eventually form the placenta and other supporting tissues, not from the inner cell mass that develops into the baby itself. This precision is astounding! Seeing images of the piece being removed and then the embryo looking perfectly fine afterwards really helped ease my mind about the safety aspect. After the biopsied cells are sent off for analysis, that's when the waiting game truly begins. It can feel like an eternity, sometimes taking a week or two, waiting for those PGT results. Each phone call felt monumental. Knowing whether an embryo is chromosomally normal or not guides the next steps – which embryo to prioritize for transfer, or if further cycles are needed based on the number of viable embryos. It’s a huge decision-making tool that brings both clarity and, sometimes, heartache if results aren't what you hoped for. This information empowers you to make highly informed choices about your embryo transfer strategy, potentially saving you from failed transfers or miscarriages down the line. For anyone going through this, remember you're not alone in these feelings. PGT biopsy is an incredible advancement in reproductive medicine, offering hope and reducing uncertainty for many. It's an investment in the health of your future family, providing invaluable information that helps make the most informed choices possible on your path to parenthood. Keep asking questions, lean on your support system, and trust in the process – it truly makes a difference.

This image introduces TE biopsy and PGT-A, explaining that 3-5 cells are removed from the future placenta, not the ICM. It outlines topics covered in the carousel, including biopsy steps, PGT-A results, aneuploidy rates, and questions for specialists.
Details the 5 steps of TE biopsy: laser zona opening, TE herniation, biopsy pipette aspiration, laser severing cells, and embryo vitrification. It emphasizes that the ICM is never touched, as only herniating trophectoderm cells are sampled for genetic analysis.
Describes the four PGT-A result types: Euploid (normal), Aneuploid (extra/missing chromosomes), Mosaic (mix of normal/aneuploid), and No Result (insufficient DNA). It provides guidance for each, especially for mosaic embryos.
TE biopsy and PGT-A is one of the most powerful tools in modern IVF. It is also one of the most misunderstood. 🔬 Day 3: A laser pulse creates a small opening in the zona pellucida. 🔬 Day 5: As the blastocyst expands, trophectoderm cells herniate through the opening. 🔬 The embryologist use

Did you know that even a perfect embryo won’t implant if the uterus isn’t ready? This is all about the window of implantation (WOI), a short 3–5 day window when your uterine lining becomes receptive to an embryo. Think of it like a landing pad that opens only briefly. If the embryo arrives too soon
