After seeing the practical magic trailer yesterday I was immediately inspired to make these candle cakes 🕯️ I’ve actually had these on my list for awhile so it was really fun having an “excuse” to finally make them. They’re a bit on the rustic side….I def underestimated how much of a pain these would be to fill and frost lol but I’m really excited to (hopefully) do some Halloween versions later this year 🎃
🕯️ to make these I stacked frosted cupcakes on top of each other. Then froze them so they’d be easier to crumb coat and finish frosting. since they’re smaller scale they’re kind of a pain to frost so freezing them really helps keep them a bit more stable. Then I added the crumb coat and finished frosting them. for the drips I used candy melts. Then added candles on top. Next time I’d use tea lights so I don’t risk the candle wax actually dropping onto the cake but I couldn’t find my tea lights so I went with I had on hand.

Making candle cakes inspired by Practical Magic is such a fun and creative baking project, especially if you love experimenting with unique cake designs. One of the best parts about these cakes is their rustic charm, which adds a cozy, cottagecore aesthetic that's perfect for setting a magical atmosphere. From my experience, freezing the stacked and frosted cupcakes before applying the crumb coat is a game-changer. It really helps stabilize the mini cake layers and makes frosting much easier to handle. When frosting small cakes like this, patience is key because it can be tricky to get smooth edges, but the rustic look definitely adds to the charm. For the drip effect, candy melts work wonderfully because they come in various colors and create vibrant, neat drips. However, I've found that using real candles on top may risk wax dripping onto your cake, so switching to tea lights or battery-operated candles can be safer and just as visually appealing. These little details can elevate the overall effect without compromising the cake's taste or presentation. Also, considering seasonal twists — like making Halloween-themed versions — adds even more fun to the process. You can customize with colors, sprinkles, or edible glitter to match the spooky or magical vibe you're aiming for. Sharing these creations with friends and family is always rewarding; it turns a simple bake into an experience filled with warmth and creativity. If you're into cake decorating and enjoy thematic baking projects, trying candle cakes is definitely worth it. They combine artistry with a bit of practical magic, and with a little practice, you can refine your technique for even more impressive results.
