Unpopular Opinion: it's too early for Christmas!

Walking into my favorite local store recently, I felt a familiar pang of seasonal confusion. There, right next to the remaining autumn harvest displays and cute fall-themed scarecrows, was an entire section bursting with Christmas mini lights, sparkly ornaments, and Santa figurines. It's October, people! My immediate thought was, "Seriously? Isn't it a bit too early for Christmas?" This isn't an isolated incident, of course. It feels like every year, the holiday season creeps earlier and earlier into the calendar, pushing Halloween and Thanksgiving into a forgotten corner. For many of us, this early commercial push can feel like a genuine buzzkill. It's an unpopular opinion to some, but I truly believe it detracts from the magic of each season when they're all blended together. We barely get a chance to enjoy pumpkin spice lattes and spooky movie nights before we're bombarded with jingle bells and snowy scenes. I've noticed certain stores are bigger culprits than others. Some seem to have a specific strategy to get a head start on holiday shopping, stocking shelves with festive goods even before the leaves have fully changed color. While I understand the business aspect – capitalizing on early shoppers and extended sales periods – as a consumer, it often leaves me feeling rushed and a little bit sad that the current season is being glossed over. It makes me wonder if these 'unpopular stores' realize they might be alienating a segment of their customers who, like me, want to live in the moment and celebrate each season as it comes. It's not that I dislike Christmas; in fact, I absolutely adore it! But part of the joy is the anticipation, the gradual build-up, and the distinct feeling of transitioning from one celebration to the next. When stores jump straight from summer to Christmas, we lose that sense of progression. I want to enjoy my Halloween candy and Thanksgiving turkey before I start planning my Christmas menu. I want to see vibrant orange and deep red fall foliage, not artificial snow and tinsel, while I'm still deciding on my Halloween costume. So, what's a seasonal purist to do? I've started actively seeking out smaller, independent boutiques or local markets that tend to honor the current season for a bit longer. They often have unique fall decorations and Halloween-themed items that truly embrace the spirit of October, rather than rushing into December. Another strategy is simply to mentally block out the early Christmas sections in larger stores and focus on the current seasonal offerings. It's about consciously choosing to engage with the present moment, even if the retail world is trying to pull you three months into the future. Ultimately, it's about personal preference. But for those of us who cherish every single season, the early arrival of Christmas decorations in stores can feel like a premature end to the fun we're currently having.
